Think we're getting a little speculative again here looking at the accident performance of other trains that weren't, thankfully, involved in this incident. Welcome to start a thread in Speculative Discussion to hash it out in more detail!
Is the green signal visible in the right side aligned with the fast line the 810 is occupying?
Was thinking the same
Absolutely 100% agree.Condolences to all those affected, especially the driver.
I think it’s worth pointing out for the many new visitors here that the UK’s railways are still amongst the safest in the world, and significantly safer than travelling by car.
Still relay interlocking (geographical type as installed for the West Hampstead resignalling) so far as I am aware. The signalling has to be all left as it was at time of incident. Not sure if Bedford has been resignalled with SSI given the changes its experienced to track layout since original resignalling in early 1980's. If its still a relay interlocking that will take sometime to check through to understand the state of all the relays, track circuits and point detection although most signalling now have an element of data recording which may make things quicker.
Sadly, this will also make it harder to find out what caused this accident, as the driver of the moving train would otherwise have been a vital witness to the state of the signals and the behaviour of the train.Condolences to all those affected, especially the driver.
There will be an onboard camera for that.Sadly, this will also make it harder to find out what caused this accident, as the driver of the moving train would otherwise have been a vital witness to the state of the signals and the behaviour of the train.
The on board train data recorder will have drivers inputs to power controller and brake recorded along with what warnings the train received from AWS. It may have a forward facing camera as well but not sure with that vintageSadly, this will also make it harder to find out what caused this accident, as the driver of the moving train would otherwise have been a vital witness to the state of the signals and the behaviour of the train.

Looking at photos of EMR 360s, they appear to have forward facing CCTV. Hopefully it was working and the recording unit data is recoverable despite the damage, as it will give RAIB a lot of information. Likewise, OTMR data will provide data on driver actions, AWS warning etc etc.Sadly, this will also make it harder to find out what caused this accident, as the driver of the moving train would otherwise have been a vital witness to the state of the signals and the behaviour of the train.
You'd be amazed how little is recorded on some units around the same age as the 360.Wouldn't most of the evidence the driver can give also be available via front facing cameras, data recorders etc?
Eleven people suffer 'very serious injuries' - ambulance service
The East of England Ambulance Service says a total of 89 people have been injured in the two-train collision that police earlier said has left one person dead.
It says 11 people have "very serious injuries", 22 are seriously injured and another 56 have minor injuries.
It goes to show that our railways are extremely safe as it is very rare for an incident like this to occur, let alone to be fatal. Of course, all condolences to the driver and their family. It's only because of the exceptional nature of these occurrences that they're so thoroughly broadcast.
The BTP web site has this:The BBC have quoted the full BTP report. They confirm some details of the crash and the fatality. Tragic news. Link:![]()
Nine people in critical condition among 100 injured in fatal collision
A driver was killed in the collision between the 16:40 train from Corby and 15:50 service from Nottingham on Friday.www.bbc.co.uk
BEWARE the live feed has footage from inside the train which is quite intense (and mods asked not to be posted here).
Major incident declared following train collision - Bedfordshire
Published: 20:57 19/06/2026
Officers are continuing to respond to a collision between two trains on the line in Bedford, following reports around 5.15pm today (19 June).
We know that a number of people have been injured and one person has very sadly died.
A major incident has been declared, and officers are continuing to respond at the scene alongside colleagues from Bedfordshire Police and the local Fire and Rescue and Ambulance Services.
The collision involved two East Midlands Railway trains.
Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy said: "We've declared a major incident and a significant emergency service response is ongoing. We're working at pace to establish exactly what's happened and will provide further information as soon as we are able to".
“Officers from British Transport Police and Bedfordshire Police are on scene with colleagues from the local authority to assist any members of the public concerned about loved ones.”
And will typically be reported in a very callous way; "Motorists advised to avoid X: XXm delays due to accident between Y and Z"Based on averages 5 people will have died on the roads in the UK today, but will unlikely be reported outside of local news.
It depends on the nature of the crash.Wouldn't most of the evidence the driver can give also be available via front facing cameras, data recorders etc?
Literally how this incident started off being reported before the seriousness became known. And will typically be reported in a very callous way; "Motorists advised to avoid X: XXm delays due to accident between Y and Z"
What was the first?RAIB are going to have their hands full this weekend, as this is the second incident investigation today!
OTDRs can help fill in the gaps on this however, manner of driving prior, speed of AWS acknowledgements, control inputs and the manner they've been used etcIt depends on the nature of the crash.
The forward facing camera does not record why things happened, for example, if the driver was distracted, or became incapacitated.
