Preserved industrial electric locomotives

In the NRM collection there is a CEGB 4 wheeled, green, battery electric locomotive built in 1944 with Bolton on the side. Apart from the other electric locomotives in their collection, do any more exist anywhere else? I remember seeing something similar to the above loco at a museum near the Air Atlantic collection at Coventry airport many years ago, but did not have the time to stop and have a look. Now I believe everything has gone. If there is a website or something which gives further information regarding what is preserved and even location details, that would be marvellous. If anyone is reading this, or can help, thank you to you all.

Well for starters, if you search the Locos Database at

for wheel arrangement 0-4-0E that will find 9 locos.
and a search for 0-4-0BE will find approx 36 locos (There seems to be a fault in that it continues to list others types of 0-4-0 too but the BE will be the first results listed)

I know Tanfield and Beamish have at least 1 each. As does the North Tyneside Steam Railway

Yes quite a few around, at Crich Tramway Museum there is an English Electric 4w shunter (i think there is one of these at the Foxfield Railway too) and a Wingrove & Rogers loco. Statfold Barn have a few as well.

At the Battlefield Line: Spondon No. 1

The loco at Cich was built for the Blackpool Tramway for shunting duties, mostly coal wagons

I thought they may be two of them, need to look this up.

Dick Kerr no 18 dating from 1918 is the only survivor of a petrol-electric design with the ability to run all-electric via a trolley pole.

It is one of the late Peter Rampton’s collection called ‘Collection X’ and I last saw it at the Vale of Rheidol museum in Aberystwyth a couple of years ago.

Ok so there is two English Electric Type 3B Shunters we are talking about.

The NRM one was not considered part of the collection but as "plant" (it was document i saw a while ago). Its not at the Manchester museum of science and is now at the East Lancs Railway. Recently saw some footage of it still working which is really good to see (initially it was going to be static in the museum as i understand it).


The 2nd one is formerly of the Ex electric railway museum Coventry, Spondon Number 1. More do survive. Spondon Number 2 is at Foxfield but has no Batteries. The Ribble Railway have one in there museum static display and there is one in the Museum of Scottish Railways (https://museumofscottishrailways.org.uk/4w-centre-cab-electric-locomotive/)

As for other electrics. The four from Kearsley Power station are still around. Details below as to where they are located

1 - East Kent Railway
2 - Tanfield Railway - became Heysham Number 2 Derek Sheppard
3 - Tanfield Railway
4 - Colne Valley Railway - became Heysham Number 1 Doug Tottman - not used but it might be operational (from what i last heard)

Thank you so much everybody for all your time and help with this little loco. I have just purchased a second hand copy of the Harton Electric Railway. Wow what a system. I was completely unaware of this along with all the other industries using electric traction. The way things are going, one lifetime will not be long enough. Earlier today I have just discovered a wonderful survivor on Hyth pier in the Solent. We are so lucky to have such a wide range of different railway subjects. Incredible. Thank you all once again, it is really appreciated.

Hythe Pier, the ferry and railway needs our support. The ferry has not run for nearly two years, the company has recently gone into administration, and it is due to volunteer effort that the pier has reopened and the train has run.
The locos are over 100 years old, originally constructed as battery operated for a WW1 Mustard Gas factory, the railway aquired three, one has been dismantled as a source of spare parts, The railway workshops are well worth a visit.As the sidings are not electrified, stock is either propelled with judgement, or pushed by hand. Amberley museum has at least two examples of battery electric locos, one being also of WW1 origin, and visited Hythe Pier. Amberley also has a battery electric mine loco, many such locos have been constructed.

Photo shows the loco on loan from Amberley in the foreground. The station platform it is alongside was in the process of being replaced. The service train is alongside the temporary platform used during this work.
