Northern Explorer - new ticket?

Of course you can have a jolly good day out for less - just as someone from Brighton can have a jolly good day out in Chichester for a lot less than the price of a Southern Day Save Ticket or someone staying in Ashford can have three day trips for a lot less than the Kent Rover. This brings a lot of places further afield within that range without the need to do vast quantities of ticket price research and with the ability to react on the day without being committed to stay at Ribblehead (for example) for the next 5 hours despite the fact that it's chucking it down with rain and your waterproof has sprung a leak. Each to his / her own, however - and if people's idea of a good day out isn't covered by this ticket they don't have to buy it.
I think potential buyers will need to do PLENTY of research beforehand to discover (for example) that they can travel direct from Manchester Victoria to Warrington Bank Quay (Northern) but not from Manchester Oxford Road direct to Warrington Bank Quay (TfW).

Any flexibilty gains that you get from not being tied to particular trains you lose by being limited to a certain TOC, in an area where multiple TOC operations are not uncommon.

To be fair I think that my point has been lost for reasons of semantics. Basically I can have a jolly good day out taking multiple trains and visiting multiple places for a third of the price of an Explorer. I was accused of not doing research and having a positive outlook. I posted two routes which showed that I very much do have both. The plan seems to have been to somehow pick apart those routes for reasons I can't fathom.

I'm done:smile:
I’m baffled that you consider what I said to be some form of accusation :D

Fundamentally, this is a good idea which will produce some good days out.

However, the DfT needs to understand that such innovations are no substitute for reliable, reasonable value, flexible off-peak fares throughout the network.

I think this Explorer is great value, as it covers a huge area and allows one to see some great areas of natural beauty and scenery. It is not a perfect ticket, as on some routes and for some exploring, there will be cheaper options using advance or split tickets, but the huge area covered by this ticket far out weighs any negatives In my opinion. In next few day am planning to use this ticket, and in the future will use use this ticket a fair amount, as its a great way to have good day exploring a huge area.

I can’t see it ever becoming valid between York and the North East due to the extortionate prices charged by LNER on that stretch of line. The fact that the Northern Explorer is valid all day and an Anytime Single between just York and Darlington is £29. The price of £35 even undercuts the price of a return from York to Darlington using Off Peak Singles.
I agree that I can't see LNER ever accepting it between York and Darlington nor TPE for that matter but I can see a world in which TPE are persuaded to accept it between Redcar Central and York (via Yarm). It's a quieter route with plenty of capacity (usually) and after 0859 doesn't undercut the Anytime fare. I think it's unlikely to be clear (especially as TPE would no doubt require a restriction along the lines of that which applies to the Off-Peak Day Return which would confuse things!) but I can see a world in which that could be agreed.

I’m actually really pleased this ticket has been created, I’m keen to get one and have a mighty good tour of the North later this year. Too committed to other adventures currently to do it before September.

For me, my nearest stations served by Northern are Chester, Crewe and Stoke-on-Trent. I can do a lot on this Northern Explorer in one day, although for the plans I’m making I’d probably go for a 2 or 3 day version to really make the most of my opportunities.

One of the main things I have in mind is going after the 3 155s I still want (it’s been far too long since my last one, no idea when I last got one done) and there’s just one more 156 I still want to finish the class (with exception to 407 which I never got to but may have done as 907, I can’t remember right now). Doing those 4 trains on any other ticket would certainly cost me a pretty penny or two, so this £35 ticket looks to be a bargain!

There’s also a number of lines I’d like to revisit which I last did many years ago when there were 142s and 144s all over the place, Saltburn is a fantastic example of that having seen what it looks like on last year’s Tour of Britain Women, it would be well worth an explore which I wasn’t all about doing way back when.

Yes there are gaps on this rover which would be annoying but I’m more than happy to work around those. Where there’s a will there’s a way, as the saying goes. Like with my very rough plan right now, I might elect to travel further into the Northern empire first and then start my Explorer there. Manchester is a good example, I could start the Explorer at Crewe of course but I’d realistically book an Advance on TfW to Manchester from Hereford to put me into an even stronger starting point. Yes it means spending more money but that’s how it is, if I wanted more flexibility I’d buy an even more expensive rover!

Anyway, enough of me rambling on about the joys of this new ticket, if it wasn’t obvious I’m actually excited about this new rover! Let’s get to the big question:

If I rock up at the ticket office in Crewe or Manchester, or even Chester, can I buy a Northern Explorer from there? Or do I have to download the Northern app first and buy it in that?

Has anyone else seen the leaflets for this?

Have picked one up from Keighley this morning.

It's available from TVMs and ticket offices (though non-Northern ticket offices might not be familiar with it!). I found it on the Longbeck Northern TVM in the rovers and rangers screen.

The leaflet says they're available from the Northern website, vending machines and ticket offices, only.

With most trains turning red white and blue how long do we think a TOC specific ticket will last?
Except on its southern borders, it’s just as much a “local services only” ticket as a TIC specific one. It’s unfortunate that in this country we have several routes that are only served by inter-city style operators (and I’m definitely including TPE in that although I agree that they represent a bit of a grey area in places)

And a good number of routes through Leeds and York.

By this measure, there's no local service between Leeds and Huddersfield or Huddersfield and Manchester.

Thanks everyone for answering my question about the rover so quickly, very much appreciated :D

I’ll probably head to Manchester and ensure I use a Northern TVM to be sure then, although Manchester Victoria’s ticket office is usually pretty good. We’ll see what happens, I need to get all it planned and time off etc sorted first anyway!

Had forgotten that they were TPE operated and definitely not even arguably “inter city”

Northern operate the Leeds-Huddersfield stopper on alternate hours (or at least they did before the TRU works).
As I said, plenty of research required to use this ticket, without being fined for being on the wrong coloured trains.

Has GBR actually delivered anything to date beyond issuing press releases and putting stickers on trains? The government boxed itself into a corner nicely with fares reform and future trials by committing to a fares freeze as well  What ever happened to that centralised Delay Repay system?

How long's it been, 6 years?

I think this is a good product, and we cannot keep throwing genuine innovations into the long grass by pointing at future fares reform as the "Do Nothing" justifier. I was hearing that excuse all the way back in 2021 as the reason not to fix fundamental problems with the reservation system.

Better a corner with a fares freeze than negative changes !

No more than any other operator-specific ticket.

You seem determined to pour scorn on the ticket and I'm genuinely not sure why. If you don't think it good value then don't buy it.

Depends how they brand it.

Thameslink Only has survived even though Thameslink disappeared as a standalone TOC in 2006.

I think Grand Central is the most likely to accept it over the current gap, due to other existing agreements between Northern and GC regarding staff travel.

There's a Northern Stopper between Leeds and Huddersfield, and there will be a second one being introduced in time.

Im planning do day out with this ticket, and as travel morning peak Crewe-Manchester-Blackpool north will run up £45 in fares, so as travelling till just after 11pm, should get £200 plus in fares for the day, as heading to York-Leeds-Hull-Sheffield then see where go from there. I dont see how people can say this explorer is not great value, with the huge area it covers. One would have to do very little travel to not recoup the price of this ticket in a day, if travel around a reasonable amount. If just looking do short journeys or spend hours looking around places, then this ticket may be more expensive then advance fares or day returns, but for a full day out exploring the network this will be by far cheapest way to do day out.

But are you spending any significant time in these places or are you just on the train? It's easy to spend money, but not easy to spend it AND have days out in destinations.

Most people use the train to get to places where they do things. The train is not an end in itself, and they are the people that are the main market for this fare.

It’s not exactly difficult to visit a number of places on a day rover and make it count. It does depend on what you want to do, of course, as well as where you want to do it.

Now if you want to do all that and do it in just a handful of hours, as well as cheaply, that’s where the issue comes in. I could easily use this rover to spend a couple of hours in Southport before moving on and visiting Cumbria for two very different parts of England, before then continuing to Lancashire. It would be a full day, of course, however I could easily make the most of it.

I’d combine lots of train action with some exploring, as alluded to in a previous post of mine. I personally think this rover is so useful I might recommend it to my sister who lives in the north. I know she’d have less use for it than I do, however there’s no part of me that thinks she’d not be able to capitalise on it at least once.

Of course, if I make it to this trip of mine before the end of the year, I’ll be sure to feedback my impressions. Final thought:

Should we not be celebrating a new rover? One of the best new tickets to be released in years, yet there’s loads of moaning about it :s

A walk-up return to Blackpool from Hull is £129.50 before 0900, and £93.50 after! The journey can easily be done with Northern changing once in Leeds

One could get £35 worth of travel out of this explorer, with decent time in one place or multiple places , or do multiple days which cheaper per day, and do proper tour around the North visiting many interesting and scenic places. Unless doing short return trip to a place, spend all day there, then this ticket Would unlikely not be good value.

Yes, it's pretty good for the Western side of the country.

A rover ticket (by its very name and nature) is not intended to be best value for a simple out and back journey - though they may sometimes be precisely that. This starts to come into its own the minute things like triangular journeys and /or weekday early starts are on the table.

I think that just goes to show how mucked up the fare system is. I doubt that many people would actually contemplate that ticket, and it's possible to do it for 40% less with advance tickets, but even then the Rover is a no-brainer, even for us railcard holders!

It's also only fair if we're doing a comparison to state that both returns that you mention allow a return journey within a month whereas you'd need to buy two rovers if you were staying overnight or longer. Even then, though, it's much cheaper.
