Strange southern service

Just been on RTT and the 22:05 southern service from Portsmouth harbour to gatwick airport is going via Worthing and Haywards heath but not calling at any station between Ford and Three bridges. I know it’s been diverted because of works on the Arun valley line but it’s weird that it stops at Ford, then straight through Worthing, shoreham, hove, and Haywards heath which are normally compulsory stops for southern. Does anyone know why this may be or is it just to make time because of the diversion.

I’ve worked services that have been changed on the fly and run nonstop from Three Bridges to Barnham via Hove due to something going wrong on the Arun Valley. It’s often done non-stop. It does also mean that if the closure didn’t take place for whatever reason then it can revert back easily.

Possibly because if there are no intermediate stops advertised via Hove etc, it can be diverted via the Arun valley if necessaryto avoid overnight engineering work without having to provide replacement buses.

It is a normal Arun Valley service diverted away from that route. It needs to maintain its usual arrival time at Gatwick Airport on a longer route. Putting the stations in wouldn't help.

It only just slots in front of the 2323 Brighton to Bedford at Preston Park.

Back to the Arun Valley next week with the same 2351 arrival at Gatwick Airport.

No such thing as a compulsory stop (except maybe those with buffers at the end lol)

1C91 is scheduled to call at Ford. There is no reason to skip it as it is only diverted after Ford.

Stops are probably missed at major coastway stations because they'd slow down the train further, in addition to the increased journey time due to diversion. See how the diverted train calls at Three Bridges at 23:46, which it usually would anyway. That way the train and staff are in the right place at the right time by the end of their journey.
