Hmm, I've never seen that supermarket before, what has bidl got in the middle aisle? Model railways? Cheap advance tickets?
It is a heavily rationalised interior. Everything you need to create your own model single-lead junction. You can even buy dolls of railway enthusiasts campaigning to restore the second track.

What people particularly like about Bidl is the ability to go up and down all the aisles. They do a discount range called Simbidls, slightly less well performing going the other way.

They also sell baguettes.

I wish I had thought of all that when posting. Thank you @To the trains

Good to see @Topological paid homage to those supernarket chains oh-so-brief during our younger decades.

I well recall Fidl*, a catchily-named clothing merchant, which traded around Heads of the Valleys. What set it apart from the other rip-off clothing sellers, was its velcro-fastened garments: quite literally a rip-off.
Saturday mornings, the young folk would huddle around the former station's sheep dock (in post 1310, left background), lured in by the merchant's strap-line: "Have a Fidl in the valley and rip 'em off").

* Faux-Lidl was its registered name - Fidl was its customer facing brand.
The chain closed, after several financial irregularities and a dabble in indie-rock.

You can see the land that was occupied by Fidl in the contemporary picture. Anika and The Academic have parked in the Fidl car park. Perhaps they used to visit, or the past version of them (seen in post 1310) did. I suspect there are few stories to tell, but memories are getting a bit fuzzy.

There are a few of the more successful firms still trading at Signal Retail Park.

Carpet light began when someone realised that when they installed electric lights their floor changed colour at night. With the advent of colour light signals in 1960, the idea that people might indeed want to explore interior decor in technicolor was born. They have several stores across the valleys. People still enjoy the fact they can see human body shapes on the floor when they are walking around their rooms.

Jellys is a more modern chain. Founded when people realised you can but marrowbone into pet food and sell that as a positive thing. The name reflects the fact that a walk with the dog on a wet and windy valleys summers day is not a jolly experience.

Ceejam is spin out from an early attempt at food delivery. You could go onto page 303 and use the coloured buttons to order either 20 potato waffles (Red), a family sized steak pie (Blue), a Vienetta (Green) or a prawn cocktail (yellow). The limited range was soon overtaken when Tesco went online. Luckily, such was the following of Ceejam that the physical stores continue to be a hit. Bricks and mortar have allowed them to expand their range into Berni Inns steakhouse products, Little Chef frozen breakfasts and a selection of deserts from Happy Eater. They had to discontinue Wimpy burgers when someone found out that Wimpy still exist.

Who knows which one Anika and the Academic have come to visit.

Is there by chance a yellow distant at the entrance with a sign saying. Log on to ripoffpark.com and insert your credit card to claim your free 5 minutes free parking when you spend £100, no return within a week

You have been to Signal Retail Park?

There is a nice image of the scene in the 1960s in my collection. The only element of the modern day scene is the curiosity signal that was installed incorrectly in the 1900s and then was never corrected.

Gemini_Generated_Image_untk5funtk5funtk.png

In the image we see that the signal offers very little protection, for that it gains a lot of love and affection, it is never right or wrong. Train drivers through Abercmwsqwd are often caught pondering where the signal will take me, those thoughts they break them, but cannot forsake them getting to the sea with their load. Their off to Barry instead.

The 1960s Anika and The Academic are not feeling weak, but probably are hoping that is a one-way street. They look above the parapet and think that they'll always be blessed with Halls.

How things would change...

That maroon-liveried Hall seems to have pre-empted Harry Potter and the Hogwarts Express by about 35 years!

That signal @Topological was designed by a Llanvihangel chap named William, or Williams (the records are not great, regardless of whether digital or vinyl. It was a long time ago).

It was said the men of Llanvihangel were not proficient in all matters of mechanical engineering, nor of late-19th Century railway infrastructure. Bunch of Charlies, locals called them.
The canny men of Llanvihangel capitalised on this, branding themselves Charlies Llanvihangels. It was possibly the first recorded marketing spin used in the Heads of the Valleys.

I failed on Llanvihangel bank many years ago when my 158 on one engine gave up with exhaustion.
Ouch! Did you sing that well-known tune by a Mr Williams:

So when I'm in a 158,
And we're going to be late,
And I hear its engine's dead -
I want a 50 instead.
And through it all, I only want a coffee
Out of the catering trolley, whether it's weak or strong.
And on the gradient, its engine won't avail me
I know its brakes will fail me, once it starts to stall.
Why won't it take me
Off Llanvihangel instead.

That is true lyrical mastery. I assume it is from your paraody album, which was apparently available in the shortlived MaxiDisc format.

Take a bow. 8-) In the style of AI pantomime, of course. ;)

Watching them, watching us.
Jodrell Bank doesn't really have a church ruin.

Jodrell Bank doesn't really have a church ruin.

They're routing me places I should never have been
Giving me aspects I should never have seen
Well, that's the job card we're driving on today
Crewe to Wilmslow I say
I hope I'm home before half 9
Back on the shed to relive the ruins flown by
Hope it's Stafford through lines
Well, Jodrell Bank wasnt on for today
Come along on my drive
Stow-on-the-Wold before half five
The 86's not feeling stable, the transformers unable to breathe
Her rectifiers beating faster so I'll ask an 87 to relieve
These are strange lines we're driving on today
Another Saltley day?

Another of your parodies?

Fantastic to see you have the deluxe 2-disc edition, as that was on disc 2.
There's a hidden track: Wife's away - time for a Jodrell Bank.

No need for a banker here.

Two farmers re-live the days gone by, thankful that they did indeed make it to being old. Neither are The Pope, but get through enough of those jugs of cider and one may be high enough to think that they are.

The Academic has brought Anika along for a ride, presumably there is a plan to live for today too. No asking Anika to leave, no matter how much faster her heart is beating.

Anika and The Academic had just the right idea, eschewing London for Heads of the Valleys' fresh air, fine scenery and Max Boyce. Old Smoke couldn't compete with that, not even "Embanament".
Besides, Abercwmboi was always far less Toora loora toora loo rye aye than Abercwmoneileen.

The failed tram, with current-collector pole down, is in homage to post 1,324's story from @Ashley Hill

If Grand Central or EMR ever decide to add a Class 52 Western to their fleet of trains.

To be fair, GC could use Westerns instead of their 180s.

Given that GWR run 80x and EMR are struggling with 8xx, perhaps the answer is to look at a different Western Region option?

The guy on the platform does not seem so sure though.

Got a bit carried away producing something that *might* just happen.

Great image @Class 466 8-) A lot comfier than the class 304 EMUs I endured!

I've gone back to rhe dying last years of the Stainmore route, between Bishop Auckland and Tebay. Here's the iconic and long-gone Belah Viaduct; and a summer Saturdays NE-NW serviice tackling the final mile towards Stainmore Summit.
K1 locos were only allowed solo (and at very reduced speed) over the Deepdale.and Belah viaducts. So a bit of Rule 1....

I couldn't find any images giving Heads of The Valleys a new view. I'm sure I've seen a shot over Abercwmfaes, so I'll look for that.

Maybe with Burnham in Number 10 we will see 350/2 in Manchester.

Gemini_Generated_Image_bsimcpbsimcpbsim.png

A possible prophecy that the new mayor is already in Number 11.
