I got to try out an ex Grand Central MK4 on a journey between Port Talbot and Swansea. I much prefer these to the ex LNER. Just generally nicer inside.

I noticed on the automated announcements they have the whole 'welcome aboard transport for Wales' like the 197s used to have. For the Welsh they also used the 'Dim Ond I..... Abertawe' on the Welsh announcement as well. I havent heard that in ages.

Catching up on this thread gives the impression that everything is running fine. Any ideas of what is booked on 1W11 tomorrow?

Could not get one of my bargain first class upgrades for the next few weeks. All the first class fares seem to be £20 or more extra on the return trip. It is nice to get coffee and a big table, but that is a bit much when the trains are so quiet for much of the journey. I will be regretting saying that between Crewe and Manchester tomorrow morning though

Its a shame that the MK4's to Swansea have so many ECS movements. I can understand the early morning movement from Canton being ECS at that hour of the morning. But I think its a shame the ECS working on a Saturday and Sunday evening from Swansea cannot be in passenger service as it is going to Cardiff anyway.

Same with the Sunday ECS working to Swansea that forms the 1032 on a Sunday.

It would be nice to see more Mk4s going to Swansea, but really, it would be better just to let the Mk4s do a consistent journey.

1W11 is indeed HD05 this morning, still empty at the moment so nothing wrong with the standard class. Had to bring my own coffee.

The Swansea issue seems so easy to solve from the armchair. Could 1V50 not just overnight at Swansea? Refuel at Llandore? Save two ECSs and avoid Canton congestion.

Fortunately many of my Mk4 journeys run to time, but 1V50 seems to always have some kind of holdup on approach to Cardiff that causes the Swansea connection to be missed. Then it’s an hour wait til the next TfW service to Swansea. I wonder why 1V50 seems to be so frequently problematic on the final part of its schedule.

Could 1V50 not just overnight at Swansea
Probably would cause issues with cleaning and restocking glassware etc. I don’t know how cups, glasses, plates etc get cleaned - is there a dishwasher in a Mk4 kitchen or does the depot have facilities?

I agree. It would save on fuel as well but im guessing the costs of setting up a depot at Landore (I know TFW do use Landore but more as a storage facility for Sprinters and 197s that are either withdrawn or broken) far outweigh the hassle of amending the Swansea service on a weekday. its a shame the MK4 cannot just stable overnight at Swansea station given it would arrive there just before 9pm and be out again around 9 hours later. But i dont think it has the fuel capacity to do that.

Another option would be to just cancel the morning working which is far less useful than the evening working in my opinion and then there would be an extra 2 hours for the set to be prepared for service as it wouldnt leave Canton until about 630am ready for the 0653 from Cardiff.

It amazes me that a unit covers the morning working when the ECS is required to go via VOG but in the evening there is no unit working a replacement service to Swansea. There is a Swanline just behind what would be this service but even so.....

Another option is just introduced an extra MK4 that can be a spare at Canton and could be prepared for service during the day from the night before. I suspect that wouldnt be very cost effective and practical either.

I assumed that was done by the staff on board when they finished serving customers and cleared away the plates and glasses etc. I know when i did my very first MK4 in First Class and did Abergavenny to Cardiff they served me my 'free' coffee in a paper cup so I assume they would have a dishwasher on board already washing the cups/glasses etc so that they could all be restocked before the staff got off at Newport. I could be totally wrong however!

It would be interesting to know exactly how long it takes to prepare them for service and what gets done. You would think from 2200 until 0400 would be enough time for the overnight shift to prepare 2 sets.

I get coffee in a takeaway cup from Hereford on 1V62 (and possibly before that).

I think some people will always find a reason not to go to Swansea. As soon as one story gets resolved, new ideas emerge.

18:30 southbound for me tomorrow. Standard again so I will have to remember to get to the station in good time.

I used the 1830 in the days when it went to Carmarthen. Now I avoid it at all costs due to the long wait at Cardiff for an onward connection, next train to Neath is 2250. If I parked in Cwmbran I could be at home an hour earlier!

Port Talbot does have a connection which then goes via the district line but even that is slower than driving to Cwmbran.

It is excellent promotion of public transport. I use Pontypool and New Inn for that very purpose. Once you are on the M4 it is an easy trip back to Swansea and the surrounds. The only thing that puts me off at the moment is the fact that the road down through Malpas has so many pot holes. In the mornings I straddle both lanes so that the holes go under my car. Not so easy once the traffic builds.

Pontypool has an excellent car park:

But there was an interesting display as I was waiting for the 05:10 this morning. A 6-car Mk4 set with 1st at one end.

Pontypool does seem to have a better service to Manchester now than it once did. It used to be mostly the Holyheads that called there with a few Manchester. Last time I used Cwmbran it was free to park the same as Pontypool is. I also used Abergavenny once quite a few years ago. You have to pay to park but using the heads of the valleys road does shave off even more time than going via M4.

Its just a shame there isnt a faster service going via Cardiff and more direct services like there used to be.

My understanding from some chats with staff during very long delays previously is that everything is handwashed, ditto for the GWR IET/HST Pullman. As a result I always keep my glass rather than accepting a fresh one with a fresh drink!

As for stock, having been on 1V50 when it did go all the way to Swansea, the kitchen is physically locked before arrival at Newport, where the catering crew and fresh food get off. Most of the time this is preceded by a last call for drinks and a switch to plastic glasses, but more than once I’ve arrived at Swansea with a glass, which I’ve left on the table on the assumption it’ll end up back in the kitchen. I would expect therefore that the set would work to Newport the following morning and get restocked when the catering crew join.

Should be better still really. The 197s can cope with the acceleration and there is a car park next to a main road. I don't see why everything does not stop there really. (Well ok, the Mk4 sets need too much dwell time, but even so there are 3 southbound sets that do call). The timing of 1W11 and 1W12 work well going to Manchester and then from 15:30 all the southbounds call. I do not think TfW designed it for me, but it certainly works well.

Abergavenny is faster, but only by a few minutes. Would need more than that to get me to pay for a car park.

That Peugeot 205 must surely qualify for the Older Cars you have seen thread; ;)

I seem to remember it moving here a while back, the old thread for these used to be under Traction and Rolling Stock!
It was under traction and rolling stock during the introduction of the MK4's. When they were all in service a thread was set up here to discuss trip reports/journeys
