When I went to Barcelona, the machine told me to go straight to the eGate - no photo or fingerprints were taken, and was the first time I'd been to Barcelona / Spain post EES
Didn't the e gate even verify your photo? Every e gate I have ever used has required me to stand while it verified my face matches the passport.

Unfortunately the situation is not helped by different countries and airports having different systems, and varying levels of implementation. However, just because you have used the kiosks once to register, doesn't mean that you won't be required to use them again on a subsequent visit. Or not.....

But imagine if an airbus A380 lands, with 300+ passengers..............
Fortunately, despite the no expenses spared policy when building the new flagship airport in Berlin to ensure it could accommodate the A380, I doubt any will be landing there anytime soon, such is the state of major air transport hubs in Germany.

But had you been anywhere else in Schengen?
Trying to work out when the EES came in - I went through Stockholm Arlanda in mid February, and possibly Dieppe Port in April (3rd), but can't remember if they did the stuff there

The e-Gate did yes, but nothing in the original machine, that was literally queueing to be told by the machine to go to an eGate.

It became operational on 10 April. Prior to that various countries had implemented it to a lesser or greater degree. And I understand some countries are still trying to wriggle out of full implementation.

Looking back, I think we may have been talking at cross purposes. My response about not understanding the purpose of the kiosks was addressed to a post from Chrisjo complaining that he had had to use them three times on visits to Spain and Portugal. However, it was you that then responded they just directed you straight to the egates at Barcelona. Suggesting that the implementation in Spain is very inconsistent.

I had an interesting experience flying into Gothenburg Landvatter the other week. Upon scanning my passport I was asked for details of the previous time I exited the EU. I was able to immediately find the booking confirmation of when I flew out of Barcelona 10 weeks previously. The border agent spent 30 seconds tapping on her keyboard and then allowed me through. Obviously my previous exit from the EU had not been properly recorded on the database. At all times the border agent was polite. Perhaps a little exasperated as it did not seem a rare occurrence and at no time was I accused of overstaying.

PS: riding every ferry in Gothenburg (including to both the North and South Islands) was immediately accepted, with a smile, as the reason for my visit.

I had an identical experience there last week too (other than Liseberg not ferries being the reason for my visit!). I note the EES tool thinks Im still in the EU after exiting at Amsterdam too, so I fully expect a similar correction to be needed on next entry.

Been looking at the EES instructions for Helsinki airport and it clearly states that you must use a kiosk even if you have already registered. The implication is that if you have already registered you will then be directed to an e gate. If not already registered you will be directed to a manual gate.

At Poznan (Poland) airport. Security queue 4 minutes, border control exiting Schengen, 5 minutes. That included having both photo and fingerprints taken. No exit stamp in the passport: "we don't do that anymore" the border guard said.

Considering there are two Ryanair flights to UK within an hour of each other, and 150+ passengers (yes, I just did a headcount in the non- Schengen waiting area), I thought both processes here were excellent. There were three border staff on duty for both EU and non-EU passport holders. Mind you, we'll see how long the queues are back in the UK.

I saw e-gates at Poznan, but they are roped off not in use yet.

I arrived back at BHX Birmingham. Despite large numbers arriving, the total time from plane to car was 15 minutes; almost a record! Heavy staff and border force presence sped things along.

New country, new EES incompetence.
Arrived in FRA today, did not see any EES machines but told by agent they could find no EES record for me.
So that is now the third country where this has happened and I had to register again.

I've visited Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Netherlands and Poland so far this year. Every country has at some point gathered photo and fingerprints, either on entry, exit or both. This is even though they already have them, I believe it's to countercheck the data they have. It won't get any better, but it should take less time to reconfirm face and fingerprint data than having to upload the data from scratch. Doh!

Some sort of problem coming to the UK at Hoek van Holland - the guy said he couldn't find my record, so he stamped me out and said something like "show that to them next time if they can't find an exit record". All very friendly and helpful

Its funny how some countries still have the stamps and will still use them. Other countries have done away with stamps at the desks.

Arriving into Warsaw Modlin, UK passports not permitted to use e- gates. Bit of a line for manned passport booths, everyone was getting a picture. Asked for a stamp and told no.

Leaving Ljubljana, not much of a wait but photo and finger prints taken. Asked for a stamp and was told they don't stamp/have them anymore. I don't really want a stamp but I am curious if anywhere will still stamp my passport.

Try Berlin, they stamped mine on entry on Sunday.

Arrived yesterday evening. No queue and no kiosks in operation, directed to a manned desk, couple of questions asked and just fingers scanned. No stamp. Whole process took about 3 mins.

Interesting observation from an Ibiza forum - if you return to Ibiza airport having done your EES there previously, it works without doing it again. However if you have done your EES at another airport you will have to fingerprint (etc) again. See if that happens to me in October!

I had a mess up tonight leaving Basel - I entered the French side a few days previous, done quickly and efficiently. The exit desks, at least for the BA flight seem to manned by the Swiss. They took ages to sort out my exit and were muttering in that Swiss German that's not easy to understand. He told me before he let me through that I had 'two profiles' but that he'd "sorted" it. My last exit from the EU was from Stockholm and I'd got the impression on that trip the guy had messed something up - hopefully no hassle next time I go in...

EES booths at Corfu not in use yesterday, four 2-manned booths, eight lanes, no queue at all, no questions, no stamps.

I went through Milan Malpensa yesterday evening. Non-EU arrivals directed to a bank of machines to register on the system. I did this whilst changing at Frankfurt earlier in the year, but the machine didn't seem to know this so I had to do right fingers (but not thumb) and picture. The first machine I tried wouldn't detect my fingers properly, but another one worked first time.
The machine said go to the purple zone, which was the e-gates. Not much of a queue, worked fine when I went through.

I have a few Berlin stamps in my Passport. I only have a few years left on the passport and only interested in stamps from new places. I am asking to see if anyone will stamp on request.

I always asked before we left the EU! The biggest challenge was convincing the Airport marshals to let you go to a manned desk, which was the case in and out of Alicante last month, a big fat NO both times! I was refused both ways at Vienna in April by the bloke on the desk aswell, Will try Dusseldorf next week!

Flew in and out of Venice Marco Polo last week.
On arrival, photo and fingerprints were taken at the e-gates; there was quite a queue though (of about 20 minutes), no doubt reflecting that several flights from the UK, US and Canada had all landed at about the same time. But more or less tolerable.

Leaving was more of a farce. The main bank of EES machines are located before security, and have the facility to take a photo and fingerprints, and once it has checked a passport and attempted to identify a passenger, gives directions as to whether one should go on to use the e-gates or go to manual passport control. Seemingly the machine didn't recognise me (I suspect the camera position, which is fixed, unlike that at the egates, is unhelpful for people of less or more than average height), so I was sent to the manual passport control.....which involved about a 45-minute queue (numerous departures to the US, UK, Canada and also China at around this time), with staff regularly checking for passengers whose planes were about to board, but who were trapped in these queues. The queues at the egates didn't seem much shorter, though.
It was rather unpleasant.

No passports being stamped though.

Departing Copenhagen Kastrup airport this morning, I passed through passport control around 05:40. No EES booths in evidence, 2 e-gates for EU only (which I used), 1 desk for EU only and 1 desk for all passports. i estimated 200 in the queue for the latter. They were taking/checking fingerprints and photos at the desks. I assume they must have opened more desks later as otherwise my flight at 07:15 would have been half empty.

Thanks for that, worried that AMS might be busy with lengthy queues - have you returned yet from AMS, if so how was it on leaving?

If there are Mediterranean airports where those already registered can simply use the e-gates and skip the EES I would like to know as I would use them over those having to go through the whole process again?

I went through AMS a couple of weeks ago - similar easy experience arriving with no queue at the kiosks, and departure was easy too, directed straight to the auto gates (I don't actually know how they knew I was already registered at that point, but whatever) and through quickly after a very short queue.

Went through Schipol last week.
Flight arrived 15 minutes early, they didn't have steps or a jetway ready for us, so we sat for 40 minutes till a jetway was put into position.
Directed to the Non EU area by an airport staff member, did the machine bit, passport, face scan, fingerprints and told to go to Route 1.
Took about 10 minutes to get through.
Time was around 9:30pm when we disembarked.

Coming home was a teatime flight on Thursday, security and passport control took around an hour, really long queues for passport control after security. I guess I may have flown through (haha) had it been an early morning or late night flight

Okay, so not only is it not consistent between airports, but not even consistent at the same airport. My trip to Prague in May was a nightmare on exit. I was directed to the non EU queue, which involved manual processing, with everyone's fingerprints and photo taken under the direction of the guard at the security desk. Long queues snaking back into the check-in area.

This time, UK passport holders were just directed to the e-gates. No manual processing, so no fingerprint check. I just hope that my Schengen exit was properly recorded.......

I expect that now there is no way any border guard can have any clue about the number of days you have been in the EU recently for anything other the country they are working for.

I am intending to travel to Vienna at the end of October, then subsequently travel to Germany, and then return to the UK in early November. I understand that it is intended to introduce the EES at the beginning of November (the new cubicles seem to be all powered up and running when I passed through Prague airport recently). So it looks like I could well be entering one EU country under the old arrangements, but leaving another part of the EU under the new. Does anybody know what the transition arrangements will be? Both UK and EU websites seem remarkably silent about arrangements for those already in the EU when the new arrangements come into force.

According to the EU site, they will no longer be stamping passports. But that would mean I will have an entry stamp in my passport, but no exit stamp, which could potentially cause problems in future. And as my fingerprints won't have been recorded on entry, will that cause me any issues with leaving? And could I have issues crossing between Austria and Germany?
Quick Data point
1 Week in Hamburg (HAM) 1 to 8 June
Entry Registered on machine then sent to Manual booth approx. 45 minutes total wait
Exit Done at departure gates no queue whatever
UK Passport stamped in and out
Why the German polizei are still doing this is anyone's guess
EES website correctly shows I have 82 days left

Arrived yesterday evening. No queue and no kiosks in operation, directed to a manned desk, couple of questions asked and just fingers scanned. No stamp. Whole process took about 3 mins.

On exiting had to go to a manual gate - fingerprints scanned again, no stamp. Boarding pass inspected.

Didn't know there was an EES days checker. Wrong by 10 days for me.

Checked mine as well - looks as though it still thinks I am in Schengen. I am making enquires.

Seamless experience at Schiphol last week on arrival. I'd been scanned there previously on my last visit in Feb, so I went to the fingerprint scanner and camera gates, and I was recognised on the system straight away. No passport stamp, or any questions, and duration of the entire process, including queuing, was approximately three minutes.
On departure from Schiphol yesterday, I used the e-gates again and sailed through again in next to no time, with '84' showing on the screen in the border guard's booth.....so my number of remaining days was already calculated correctly, and the EES checker is showing the same today.
So it seems to be working OK for me so far......
