Holland 49 off peak monthly pass

Holland had a 49 euro monthly off peak pass during the summer. It's subscription style, but you can cancel. Peak is a couple of hours morning and evening on weekdays. Looks pretty good value.

If only we had something similar....

"Nederland DalVrij" is a subsidised version of DalVrij, but otherwise pretty similar though not valid in international trains even within the Netherlands and no first class upgrade possible.
And be aware it has a "self-destruct" function: when the subsidy from the government runs out they will stop selling it, also when the validity period is not yet over.

Not valid in the ICE, Eurostar or Nightjet (or European Sleeper or GoVolta - NS always ignore those...), but still on other international trains.

Note that anyone from abroad interested in getting this needs to get a personal OV-Chipkaart. It is not trivial. Judging by searches on here and elsewhere on the internet, some people have jumped through lots of hoops to get hold of one.

It's mostly aimed at filling empty off-peak seats with leisure travellers. It's really just a less complicated, more publicised and better value countrywide version of the many rovers on the UK network such as the Northern Explorer or Anglia Plus rover.

Though the Netherlands is partly ahead in that frequencies of rural rail in the Netherlands is generally higher - minimum 1tph nationwide, generally 2tph if the line serves a sizeable town. Lower frequencies and older rolling stock on the GB network limit the amount of (non rail-enthusiast) passengers who'd enjoy travelling around on it during the summer.

Internal sources at NS seem to confirm this, mentioning a "Maandkaart Nederland Dal Vrij", available at ticket machines.
