Was that one of the "Coronation" cars by any chance...? They had a frequent issue with something technical* that eventually got replaced.The other incident occurred a bit earlier, in around 1961. A family trip to Blackpool during the Illuminations saw my sister and me waiting for a tram near the tower. As the railcoach approached I spotted a little flame coming from the trolley base. The trolley cable was obviously damaged because the next thing I knew a shower of sparks shot in every direction. We didn't think and ran away across the promenade to safety giving no consideration to any traffic that might be passing. Somehow, we didn't come into contact with any of the many cars I'm sure were there. The strange thing about this experience is that I became very much involved with Blackpool tram engineering almost twenty years later.
