Rail Staff Question - Oyster Card

I'm a current rail employee. Im thinking of switching TOC's to one located in the London area. This TOC offers a concessionary oyster card for travel in zones 1-6 (can be used for residential & leisure travel)
As I live outside zone 6, would I only need to pay the discounted season ticket rate (staff travel) between my home station and the first station that Oyster is valid from as essentially anything beyond would be covered by the Oyster card? Thanks

From a ticketing point of view, your concessionary Oyster card would be valid to combine with another ticket to the first station in Zone 6. You wouldn't need to stop at that station because you'd be combining two season/zonal tickets.

However, the RST form for requesting a reduced rate season ticket requires you to specify the nearest stations to your home and work. Any exception to this rule must be justified. When, in a previous job, I wanted to take advantage of a mutual staff pass agreement for part of my commute, I was told by RST that I couldn't get a season ticket that only for the non-covered part of my commute to work. I would either have to pay the public rate for the non-covered part, or get a reduced rate season ticket that covered my entire commute.

So you may not have any luck with RST, but I would say it's worth a try, explaining the reason why you aren't specifying the nearest station to your work. The worst they can say is no.

Thanks for your reply. Good to know & yeah worth a try. Would be nice rather then it being a blanket fare on simply my home station to my work station, the reduced fare could be applied to part of the journey but dont hold out much hope but let's see!

You must have been misinformed if that were the case. It has always been possible to obtain a reduced rate season ticket for part of the route, as it is common for many staff where part of their journey to work is on their own company's services. I have never been refused one previously. Occasionally they want to talk to you over the phone as to the reason for it, but I have never been refused even when the ticket is slightly off the most direct route.

Ok, thanks for your reply. Good to know. I'll definitely talk to them if necessary to explain and hopefully I can then obtain a reduced ticket for the portion of the journey which isnt covered.

Hi, just to clarify, are you looking at moving to Elizabeth line / London Overground? If so, the ‘zones 1-6’ is a bit misleading. It’s been the the job adverts for years but isn’t necessarily true.

A staff pass as issued by those two plus LU, are full travel cards for TfL services in whatever zone, so any TfL train including out to Reading and Shenfield on EL,, but with some additional quirks where there are some agreements for use of some services operated by national rail - see here - https://foi.tfl.gov.uk/FOI-2348-2425/R2990 Staff Oyster Card Conditions of Use.pdf

So, if you are going to one of those for example, and you live in Milton Keynes, needing to get into Euston for arguments sake, then you would require a priv season from MKC to Watford Jcn, then your staff pass is valid from Watford Jcn into Euston, and the train doesn’t have to call at WFJ.

However, you’re on about GTR/LNER/Eurostar where you get a ‘PTAC’, then you must live in greater London (for the most part that is Z1-6) to qualify for it, and it’s 75% of PAYG travel on TfL services, and that’s for all services operated by TfL including out past zone 6.

If you clarify the TOC and the journey you’re making it’ll be easier to advise definitively.

Yes, it would be overground based at NXG. I live in Hurst Green, so just outside Oyster Fare Zone. My nearest station that accepts Oyster is Upper Warlingham.

Would I be eligible to get a piriv season ticket then between HG & UW and then use the Oyster Card from there (obviously without getting off the train) to London Bridge & then to NXG?

Sorry if im getting confused!
Many Thanks

That's unfortunately not what I was told at the time. I was rather surprised by what they said to me as it doesn't make much sense.

Yes, that would be valid. Upper Warlingham is the first station in Zone 6 on that route. The train wouldn't need to stop there for the combination to be valid.

Ah ok, so there is no inter availability on any part of that route between southern and TfL, so that would mean you’d have to change at Norwood Jcn and East Croydon, with your staff pass from NXG to Norwood Jcn, and then priv season from Norwood Jcn to Hurst Green

Hurst Green to New Cross Gate 12mo Season with priv - 12 months £688 - https://www.brfares.com/!faredetail?orig=HUR&dest=NXG&rlc=PRV&rte=700&tkt=0AS

Hurst Green to Norwoof Jcn 12mo Season with priv - £679 - https://www.brfares.com/!faredetail?orig=HUR&dest=NWD&rlc=PRV&rte=700&tkt=0AS

So there’s not a massive saving.

If you could get a Hurst Green to London Bridge ticket through RST (i don’t have any experience of them to be honest), that’s £787 (https://www.brfares.com/!faredetail?orig=HUR&dest=LBG&grpd=4452&rlc=PRV&rte=208&tkt=0AS) then either double back from London Bridge on the same season to NXG, or take the Jubilee then Windrush line, but again, more expensive, and not sure if RST would allow it without some arguing.

Although the adverts say ‘Zone 1-6 travel card’ this is one of those examples where a. it’s not true (in all examples to be honest), but b. it doesn’t necessarily save you much with the travel card if you don’t live on one of the 6 interavailable routes for staff passes.

4. You can use your staff Oyster card on the following:

• All TfL rail services operated by London Underground, Docklands Light Railway, London Overground, Elizabeth line and Tramlink (except for any special services e.g., steam specials or rail tours)

• London’s bus services displaying the red or white roundel on the front and any other bus service where TfL fares apply (except for any special services)

•National Rail services (standard class only) between the following stations:

Amersham - Marylebone
Stratford - Liverpool Street
Finsbury Park - Moorgate (via Drayton Park only)
Kentish Town - Elephant & Castle or London Bridge
Fenchurch Street - Upminster
Euston - Watford Junction

Yes, that would be valid. Upper Warlingham is the first station in Zone 6 on that route. The train wouldn't need to stop there for the combination to be valid.

Just to be clear the ‘Zone 1-6 travel card’ is very misleading. The full terms and conditions of a TfL staff pass can be found here , but it’s by no means a regular travel card as you could buy at a ticket office.

RST are quite understanding. At my old location, I requested my season ticket to be between Deptford and Abbey Wood instead of New Cross and Abbey Wood.

They asked why and I told them that although New Cross is closer to my house, Deptford has 4tph off-peak vice 2tph at New Cross. They accepted it.

I was wondering which Oyster you meant but now it is clear it is a TfL Oyster plus priv rate on National Rail, so I think your best bet is a reduced rate season to London Terminals at £787 annually if you get get hold of it, as you still have to pay on Southern/Thameslink. It allows all those other trips to Victoria, Waterloo, etc, that you may wish to make for leisure.

Perhaps do a monthly one when you first start and see how you get on. Once you have a better idea about your shift times and your usual trains, you can then decide if it is worth the £100-£150 premium a year.

My experience was that they accepted my explanation of using the TOC pass for part of the journey.
The only query was over the ‘home’ station as according to RST, the nearest station was a little used one that required a journey to the ‘big’ station for my travel. Again resolved very quickly when explained.

Ok..so am I right in thinking because Upper Warlingham (first station on my line which accepts Oyster Cards) isn't on the Tfl rail service, as operated by Southern & Thameslink, I would need to get a Priv Season from Hurst Green to London Bridge & then could I use the Staff Oyster from there to NXG?

Sorry this all seems so confusing! Thx

Don’t apologise, it is confusing

You’ll need either a season from Hurst Green to Norwood Junction, or Hurst Green to London Bridge/London Terminals, depending on your shift patterns and what trains are like at those times and how long you’re willing to wait for connections and how many connections you want to make.

As bb21 says, I would probably get a season to London Terminals for the first month, try it out, and also try connecting at East Croydon then Norwood which would also be an option as it’s valid with that ticket, and see which works out quickest and easiest, then make a more long term decision from there.

You may find, due to shift times, the first/last trains to/from HUR aren't suitable, so could ask for a season also available at Redhill or somewhere on the Brighton Mainline (or a HUR should be valid at Purley, due to the Whyteleafe/Upper Warlingham interchange which has a 24 hour service)

Thanks so much all for taking the time to reply to me.
Am I right in thinking then that due to where I live, the 'free oyster card' perk in my case isn't valid and as everyone has stated, my best bet is to get a reduced season ticket to london terminals.

Also can anyone confirm I could use the oyster card for the portion of the journey between Lon Bridge & NXG?

For me, time spent travelling/less connections is most important.

Many thanks again

A TfL staff pass is only valid on TfL services (plus some other interavailable routes, such as the Thameslink core).
Calling it a Travelcard is wrong, as it's not a Travelcard.
And saying it's only valid in Zones 1-6 is also wrong, as it's valid on TfL services, some of which extended outside Zone 6.

Not on a direct train from London Bridge to New Cross Gate, as it'd be a Southern train, but your London Terminals season ticket would be valid as a season ticket is valid at any intermediate station on a permitted route.

(You could use the TfL staff pass on London Bridge jubilee line to Canada Water then London Overground to New Cross Gate, if you needed to go that way)

When I worked for LUL/TfL I lived in Milton Keynes my priv season was MKC to London terminals. However I only had to pay to Watford jct. Is this what you meant. Or are you inferring that you only have a season MKC -WFJ.

I’m LU as well, which means of course we get the ‘priv’ season equivalent direct through TfL either through reimbursement or at purchase depending on TOC.

If you were commuting from MKC to Euston, then you’d only need a season from MKC-WFJ, as your staff pass is valid on any operator from WFJ-EUS, so you wouldn’t need WFJ-EUS part of the season, if that’s what you mean?

That depends on when you started working for them - if it was pre-1996, you would be safeguarded, so would have got free mileage.
Is that what you mean? If so, that wouldn't apply here

I started in 1989, took VS in 2005. I think the free travel between Euston and Watford Jct is a historical week to when the Bakerloo use to run to Watford Jct. I was just wondering if you now get a season only to Watford. As a matter of interest I never showed my staff pass. Only the season ticket particularly if I was catching a Virgin Trains service as some of their TMs didn't recognise a staff pass on their service.
