That is a proper shambles.... Feel for the cafe there, imagine this will make it impossible for them to continue trading.
And all the other properties on that side of the river who have now been cut off at no notice by a tightwad county council dominated by greedy farmers and who have done no discernible maintenance for years on a footbridge which is on a public right of way and for which they are statutorily responsible. NYC are claiming sudden unexpected deterioration - pull the other one. “We tried to get away with spending nothing for a bit longer and now it’s bitten us on the backside” would be more like it.

If the crossover was within station limits - between the advanced starter [section signal] and the station - then no token required for any move over the crossover onto the single line and toward the station - the crossover being controlled from the signal box - and the movement controlled by ground position signals. The current temporary slew is outside station limits - if a crossover was to become a permanent feature at that location - it would require the repositioning of the down distant / outer home / inner home signals - and the advanced starter - which is ion the same bracket as the inner home. Moving the signals would be far simpler than providing an intermediate token machine.
Agreed that moving the existing down distant / outer home / inner home and advanced starter signals to make the suggested new crossover within station limits may not be too complicated, but controlling that new crossover and its associated new signals from the existing signalbox would likely be a significant job. Even if there are sufficient suitably-placed spare levers available to work them, the existing locking would need altering to correctly interlock them.

Whereas a simple in-section ground-frame with an intermediate token instrument could surely be provided as a completely self-contained exercise, without any alterations being needed to the signalbox.

Question - are NYC in breach of any disability accessibility requirements with this temp route which is clearly not suitable for the disabled and advanced elderly

It was the council that closed the bridge, so presumably the council that put the diversion in place?

I believe work to start replacing the bridge is starting very soon

From images on facebook (from the Grosmont coop) it appears work has already started on the bridge, which I read as trying to find a way to get it open (even if supported by scaffolding)

Do the council also own the bridge?

More generally, if an organisation has to do something like close a bridge in circumstances like these, their responsibility is to take reasonable steps to provide an alternative, either until the original route is remedied or permanently if it isn't. As is often the case, that awful word "reasonable" does a lot of heavy lifting. For example, closing a pavement because a retaining wall is at risk of collapse can normally be remedied easily by partitioning part of the road surface and if necessary putting in temporary ramps, so "reasonable" in that context would be interpreted as something like "immediately, just get it done". The Grosmont example is at the other end of the scale and the council will have to take some time to consider their options. The physical constraints of the site in Grosmont will obviously make it pretty complicated.

Just adding to my post earlier in the week, the Grosmont coop (shop next to the level crossing in Grosmont) is reporting today the footbridge is now open. Looks to be strengthened with scaffolding around it.

Good to see the bridge opened and a day early from what some comments on the Grosmont Co-Op page had suggested. I do wonder if the quick reversal of not having a replacement had anything to do with the resident that was "stranded" on the wrong side and who had a medical episode (thankfully survived from all accounts) and the crew attending had no choice but to get them over the now out of service bridge to the ambulance... Does seem awfully suspicious in timing in my own opinion

I have only seen a close up image of one end of it though which looks narrow though of course anything is better compared to nothing - what is the position of it compared to the original footbridge on a map?

Looking at the photos on the coop’s Facebook page it looks like the scaffolding has been built to support the existing bridge. Difficult to tell for sure but looking at the distance from the railway and the houses and comparing to google maps it’s hard to see where else it could be

I recall that there was a problem at the North end of this platform detected a year or more ago. (Subsidence?) So perhaps they are getting that sorted out to allow the full use of platform 4 this year.

I believe that its mining subsidence which is under investigation but don't know any timescale for repair.

And that timescale won't be helped by the emergency work required on the river bridge, or the railway's general lack of spare cash.

Does anyone know if the Hymek for the Diesel Gala will be arriving by road or tagging along with 37250 tomorrow/Tuesday?
Thank you

D7017 wasn't in the convoy that left the West Somerset Railway this morning with the 37,47 and 26 the latter dropped off at Barrow Hill.

Or was that D7018 that was at the WSR gala?

D7018 is currently at the SVR and will be for the next month or so.

Was on the NYMR on saturday and it just feels it’s going down hill. No buffet service service on our train advised no one turned up. Then advised the Pullman was running as it states in the timetable so the afternoon service would not run. So we only had a short time in Pickering only to get back to grosmont to see Pullman not running and the normal train running which was empty. And the sidings at grosmont heading for Whitby look in a poor state. And where’s all the steam locos were they hiding at grosmont mpd. I’ve been coming here for the last 40 years and never seen it in such a state. why give away the class 101 DMU and then bring in the totally useless autocar!!! I also don’t understand why they didn’t go after a pacer when the leasing companies were giving them away or was this not good enough for them it would‘ve been a good fit as they were used to Whitby in their BR days.
