They're going to stay out all day. In fact, both Metrocar pairs are on diagrams running south of the Tyne from Haymarket (i.e to South Shields and South Hylton) that involve terminating at Haymarket and turning back.
- T105 finishes at Haymarket at 23:04
- T133 finishes at Pelaw at 23:42
I'm wondering if the units that finish south of Haymarket will be stored down there or whether it be possible to take them to Howdon/Gosforth depot via the manors curve?

I believe the ones that are "trapped" are going to stable at Pelaw and South Shields. I'm pretty sure that's what happened previously.

The scrapyard (J Denham Metals in Shildon) is still trading, and Metrocars are still going there to be disposed of. It's the haulage company (GCS Johnson) that went bust. The new haulage company they're using is Railway Support Services who are based in Birmingham.

No problem about late. Went anyway ... my wife was off to Durham to help with a wedding dress selection and men not welcome, so got myself dropped on en route on basis that having seen and travelled old Metro fleet many times over, time to start on new. Information about M-F very useful. Other than early meeting at work on Wednesday, rest of day mine to use as I see fit, which will therefore include trip up to West Jesmond or South Gosforth to see what turns up.
The most recent Branch Line News, issued yesterday, alludes to a special diagram for the final week of planned Metrocar operation:
South Gosforth 09.33 - South Hylton 10.58
- South Gosforth 11.49 - Airport 12.31 - South Gosforth 13.42 - St James 14.43 - Whitley Bay - Pelaw -
South Shields 16.19 - Airport 17.22 - South Gosforth (arr 17.35).

I had my final rides in November. I've a sentimental attachment to them, but those rides confirmed to me why Nexus are right to be ditching them and passing preservation on to others to manage. And as those involved with heritage operation in London have confirmed, it really, really, isn't profitable.

as much as i love the Metrocars, i wont be signing or sharing either, why?, pretty much obvious really, the old girls are past it, they've also had 2 refurbs when really they should of been gone by 2012, also parts, what you gonna do when all the spares run out?, im sure theres more reasons also

They're knackered and you'd need to keep drivers competent on them (and store them somewhere).

I can see the merit in keeping a couple preserved but even as a "spare" set for events it isn't going to happen. Its not as simple as just fire one up and go.

In all honesty, this sort of thing is something only really well reserved to the likes of London Underground who, even so, find that such preservation projects are a money-pit and are difficult to crowdsource. It simply would not have any success in the North East, they take up space and cost a lot to maintain, run and will eventually be outdated by the upgrades in signalling system and technology on the system. They are great for preservation, maybe even runners in heritage railways but never on the actual network. Metro is not volunteer run, its not a charity, its operator-ran.

With all due respect, this petition will see no success. I'd say you could have more luck attempting to reach out to heritage sites, that would hold onto a light rail vehicle even for just static display purposes, to acquire one.

It’s a nice idea, but sadly not really realistic. As others have said, the metrocars really are life-expired, in fact they reached that point 10-15 years ago, so (depending on one’s viewpoint!) it’s lucky they have lasted this long. Whilst they have their charm, and I for one will be very sad to see them finish, reliability has been a massive issue for a long time, trains of this age cost a lot of money to keep running. Then there’s the issue of who drives them, which adds a further cost.
Realistically, the only hope for a couple of cars to remain on the system is if there’s an engineering use for them, for example as an autumn railhead treatment facility. There has been some chatter about this, so it could yet happen, although it would presumably be just as viable to modify one or more of the new trains to perform this role. One might consider that if the old trains do have some kind of “iconic” status then any retained units could in theory carry passengers on limited occasions, but I struggle to see what those occasions might be. I’m not sure to what extent the average geordie would be keen to ride them anyway, the metro has never had that much of an enthusiast following, it’s always been somewhat niche, indeed for much of this century Nexus et all haven’t been particularly welcoming to enthusiasts, though there does seem to have been a softening more recently.
