Your favourite stretches of road

yep that’s a cracker. One of the best drives I’ve ever done. I won’t say how quickly i’ve done it.

Only did it twice overall, both times in 2010; we stayed in a cottage in Kilchoan (one on Pier Road) for two weeks for our summer holidays that year and even though I don't travel that well by car over long distances - used to suffer quite badly from travel sickness - the scenery on that part of the journey lodged itself firmly in my brain even if my mode of transport was my dad's packed to the gunnels with holiday kit Vauxhall Zafira lol

Would love to go back and do that road again at some point. Some of the scenery/landscapes wouldn't look too out of place in the Tolkien mythos.

It’s a lot busier these days. At least in the warmer half of the year.

Craignure to Fionnphort, heading for the Iona ferry.

I first did this by cycle, carrying camping stuff. The return was on the service bus (it was blowing a gale), and subsequent visits have been motorised!

That's a stunning drive,done it back in 1981 ,two things I remember (apart from the scenery ) the lack of traffic,think we only saw two other vehicles in about 6 hours and the constant gear changing required !

That's good to know should I ever get back up that way. The scenery would be worth enduring the traffic for tho imho.

From what I remember, it was fairly quiet in both directions in 2010, and that was in high summer. A lot busier now, going off of @Bald Rick's post above.

Go early morning and you’ll miss the tourists and havea largely clear run. Go in the afternoon and you‘ll be stopping lots to let them past the other way. And almost certainly be behind a couple in hire cars who don’t / won’t follow the instructions to use passing places to let faster cars overtake.

Despite often being congested and prone to treacherous weather, my first nomination is the cross-Pennine section of the M62, particularly when heading East. Not only is the scenery spectacular, but after the summit at Rishworth Moor you get a long straight section where (if it's quiet and there are no patrols about) you can really open up the throttle a bit. It's also a "homecoming" road, and even now I have to remind myself not to leave at J23 as I no longer live in Huddersfield.

In second place I'll go to the other extreme and nominate Mortimer Road (aka The Strines), an unclassified route* linking Penistone with the A57 "Snake Pass"- in particular the section from the A628 Wood head Pass southwards. It certainly isn't a fast road, and won't do your MPG figures any favours, but the scenery is breathtaking as you dip in and out of forests to crest over patches of moorland.

In third place I'll put a road I haven't actually driven myself, but have only used as a passenger- the A9 between Perth and Inverness. Perhaps my opinion will change once I've been at the pointy end, but as a young passenger it was great fun trying to track when the Highland Main Line would next pop into view... We also had a caravan on the back, so we weren't being held up by anything!

*= The road may have a Cxxx designation but this isn't displayed on any signposts, or on any maps I've seen.

Yes, the Strines is a good drive.
It's also fun on the South Pennine 87 (Wed only). Stay on at Castleton and it becomes an 87A and will take you up Winnats Pass.
Don't miss the return because it's one hell of a trog by other bus routes back to Holmfirth (either East or West of the Pennines)
EDIT. South Pennine have announced that they are closing route 87 (along with some others) at the end of June.

The B6255 goes from Hawes to Ingleton and is a good drive.
Although a drive from Hawes to Ingleby Arncliffe or Ingleby Greenhow would be nice.

My favourite road is the A628 Woodhead pass between Manchester and South Yorkshire in the Peak District National Park. Always looking out for remains of the closed railway line. Also The Seven Sisters road between Brighton and Eastbourne, always turn off to visit Birling Gap.

Woodhead Pass is a good drive but only when traffic is low. It's a pain when you are in a mile long "train" behind a string of HGV's
I used to drive it daily and the best way to avoid boredom was to play "spot the new holes in the walls"
