Avanti reservations

I will shortly be using a 1st-class ALR. On checking a few Avanti services to and from Euston, I'm getting a " Compulsory reservations" note on all trains I have checked.
Can I not turn up and go, as my journeys will be very flexible?

Presume you're not attempting to travel into (or maybe out of) London Euston using Avanti, before 1000 (Mondays to Fridays)?

You can as long as you abide by the time restrictions on the ticket. A reservation is not actually necessary.

You absolutely can, which is the point of walk on tickets. Avanti so have a coach which is unreserved too.

I think they key is arrive, armed with Real Time Trains and Tiger (which is faster at updating but a tad more complicated to use) to make sure you are at the front of any queue!

No, I've been checking the northbound trains around 1830. Strange that RTT shows the symbol.
All Avanti trains at all times are “reservations compulsory”. Similarly LNER. Both of them have unreserved and unreserveable seats on all their trains. It’s been much discussed and moaned about in the forum. Most people don’t notice.

Wow! I'd never heard of Tiger before; isn't it, well, wonderful!
BTW, I normally get a lift on the Disability Buggies if I arrive early enough, which gets me on well in advance of anyone else. There are advantages to being old and knackered sometimes. :)

Thanks for the help. I shall ignore the symbols on RTT.

I've been using a 1st class ALR for the last two weeks up and down the WCML. Plenty of unreserved (or 'reserved' but unoccupied) seats in 1st on peak and off peak Pendolino services on weekdays (including to/from Euston); less so on weekends and Bank Holiday Monday due to coach K only being available.

I've had very good results sending the Avanti team a direct message on Facebook to request seat reservations. They ask for a photo of the ticket but process the reservations very quickly

Can't use an All Line Rover on Avanti, into or out of London Euston, Mon-Fri (BHX), for arrivals/departures before 1000.

I didn't read the original post correctly.
So it's LNW somewhere a bit north then onto an Avanti service? (Unless the OP is travelling on a Sat/Sun/Bank Hol)

Just to add I didn't read your post correctly about the rover, and of course there are restrictions from Euston as Mcr Warrior pointed out.

Not valid for boarding or alighting train services operated by CrossCountry**,** East Midlands Railway, LNER, or Avanti West Coast after 04:29 and before 10:00 at the following stations:

  • Birmingham New Street
  • Bedford
  • London Euston
  • London Kings Cross
  • London St Pancras International
  • Luton
  • Luton Airport Parkway
  • Milton Keynes Central
  • Stevenage
  • Watford Junction
Not just Euston

I spent half-an-hour on the Avanti website recently trying to find out how or where to actually buy a "compulsory" reservation, i.e. for a walk-up ticket, and gave up. If it's there it's well hidden. Thanks to the above info I won't bother now.

For future information, you can get those on the TPE website after creating an account

Thanks. So, TPE not Avanti? How bizarre. Anyway, I hate opening accounts, but thanks anyway.

GWR used to let you book those reservations but system change (and some free ticket vulnerabilities with this facility as well) closed that for them a few months ago. You can also pop in at any ticket office for them to do it.

It's up to the retailer whether to do it or not as a standalone product (same for bikes reservations), of course as part of a ticket purchase you'll get the eventual seat reservation corresponding to your trip at every retailer.

There are no compulsory reservations; even Avanti won’t advertise them as such if you check through their channels. What’s concerning is the creeping tendency for this workaround hack to be talked about online as if it were actual policy.

So how does it creep into the pdf timetables on the NR website? I remember a similar "hack" appearing on the GWR Gatwick - Reading service, when all trains were suddenly marked as compulsory reservation a few years ago. A quick chat with guards and booking office staff revealed this to be nonsense (and unenforceable anyway on a "paytrain" type line) but it did cause a lot of hassle for staff and passengers.

(Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere and I missed it)

The compulsory reservations flag is added to the data by the train companies in order to force retailers to check availability when issuing tickets. It allows trains to show as "sold out". Effectively the reservations are "compulsory" only for the retailer (except Caledonian sleeper where the reservations *are* actually compulsory).

It hasn’t crept in, it’s been that way since 2020/Covid. It just never got rescinded subsequently, because Avanti and others would love to force all their passengers to make mandatory reservations in advance of travelling.

On my packed 11-coach Edinburgh-Euston train yesterday (I boarded at Lancaster 10:58) the seat reservations weren't working, yet absolutely no announcements were made in the over two hours I was on it to Birmingham. It was pandemonium, with people wheeling huge cases up and down the aisles hoping to spot a vacant seat. Before I realised the reservations weren't working I had claimed my booked seat off a gentleman who was sitting in it, and luckily he obliged and moved without question, but not everyone was so lucky.

It would be good if they'd made an announcement after each station advising people to "sit anywhere" or "sit in their reserved seat", or even to move to 1st Class if they couldn't find a seat at all. It's a long journey if you're going all the way to Euston and have to stand.

I agree that's very poor for the Train Managers (both before and after the change of crew at Preston) to not mention about this over the PA.

The TM and ideally Station Staff beforehand could have announced asking pax to just get a seat in a carriage of their relevant class of travel and stated which coaches are Standard, which ones are Standard Premium and which ones are First Class.

Because it's in the data. But yeah it's exactly the same nonsense as Gatwick - Reading, Coaches C and U are unreserved and I never bother with reservations on Avanti personally. The only risk is that if people start taking it seriously, a decade from now new management might forget that it was only ever a workaround, and suddenly it will have "always been a real thing."
