Is my journey valid? (9I restriction code confusion)

I want to buy an Off Peak Return from Maidstone station to Buxton, and use it to travel to Derby on the outbound leg.

This ticket has restriction code 9I.

My preferred journey is:
17:25 Maidstone West -> Strood
18:05 Strood -> St Pancras
19:02 St Pancras -> Derby

The 19:02 is the first Off Peak train under the published restriction. However, I can’t get a journey planner to offer me an itinerary using this train (I’ve tried the forum’s site, TfW and Southeastern).

I can’t see anything in the restriction codes that would make this journey invalid on the ticket, unless the restriction on departures from ‘Stratford (London)’ includes up trains passing through Stratford International.

Is my proposed journey a valid use of this ticket, or are the journey planners right?

• Stratford (London) after 04:29 and before 09:30 or after 16:29 and before 18:34;

But not clear if that also applies to calling at Stratford International (which is technically a separate station), but like you, to me that seems wrong

Presumably you're using the validity via the MML to Manchester? If so the itineraries it will give presumably simply relate to the hourly Buxton connection from there (just doing an itinerary to Derby doesn't really tell you anything as this isn't 9I). I too can't see anything in the restriction code that would prohibit that. Though don't be surprised if you get a bit of hassle at the St Pancras gateline from staff who don't know about the validity that way to Manchester.

Not if you don't board there, no. Also Stratford (London) isn't Stratford Intl.

Thanks @Bletchleyite . That's exactly right. My actual journey is Maidstone to Derby OUT, Buxton to Maidstone RTN, making use of the valid routing via the MML to do all that on a return ticket.

I hadn't considered the Buxton connection being the limiting factor affecting journey planner itineraries.

It sounds as though my proposed journey is indeed valid then, but that I’ll struggle to get a printed itinerary to show it to insulate me from gateline hassle.

You'll probably have to play with the connection time to get a through itinerary. Here's one, from St Pancras to Buxton, that I got by specifying that you must change at Derby with an extra 30 minutes allowed, using FastJP. You could get the same itinerary from Trainsplit, as it uses the same journey planner.

No "technically" about it. It's a separate station and restrictions appplying to Stratford (London) don't apply to Stratford Intl any more than they would apply to Stratford-upon-Avon.
