If you were at Watford earlier the 321 direct to Luton would have been the better option, either walk back to St Peter's street for the 321 or get it from Harpenden.
Was the train listed on the departure board at all, you took a picture of the next fastest screen not the departure boards. Something doesn't add up to me, also if inside the barriers how did you miss the announcements or the screens by the buffer stops.

This same procedure happens daily all over the country, on trains produced by all different manufacturers. lots of different names but the same procedure, Aux off/on, Battery off and on, tripping the auxhillaries.
