A Class 74 was a regular performer on what I think was the 7.17 from Eastleigh to Waterloo. Usually the74 was at the head of the 11TC formation, but occasionally at the rear. On at least one occasion it was sandwiched between 8TC and 3TC! There was also the occasional substitution of a Class 73.
Back in the 1960s there was an 11TC/Class 74 formation into Waterloo - presumably from Southampton - which I saw everyday while waiting at Fleet for a service in the opposite direction. Occasionally, this had the 74 sandwiched between the 3 TC and one of the 4TCs.

As a child I had several holdiays with my parents which involved a journey to Stoke Fleming, near Darmouth in Devon, by coach. As I recall, we boarded in Basingstoke, and changed coaches in Exeter. In those pre-motorway days it was a bit of an all day jaunt, leaving Basingstoke at 10:30 or so...
It was certainly a grass bank back in the mid 60s when I travelled to school in Farnborough from Fleet. The regular engine in the morning was Winston Churchill.
Stagecoach 81 Bedford to Luton is frequently operated by coaches. In the main this is, I think, as a result of positioning moves for vehicles used on the Luton Airport to Milton Keynes service. There is also a good mix of single and double deck buses on the 81 route.
