East-West Rail (EWR) countdown to entry into service

Thameslink is DOO. So up to 12 car trains, crush loaded in the peak, Bedford/Cambridge to Brighton, Peterborough to Horsham.

Any service crossing in to England should transfer to GBR

In a similar context should TfL services transfer to GBR if they go outside Greater London? What about Merseyrail?

    Credit /Debit Cards in Germany

I was charged in Euros no GBP alternative. I was surprised and queried it but the waiter did not know anything more as the charge was automatically added by the machine. As a consequence I did not leave a tip.

    Credit /Debit Cards in Germany

Earlier this month we had a holiday to Munich and Garmisch Partenkirchen. Munich was ok with cards; we used the MVGo app to travel around. One restaurant applied a surcharge for non EU cards. In Garmisch and surrounds it was cash preferred and we had to get more out at an ATM. A number of...

DfT/Network Rail 'Future Electric Railway' strategy

If you want to have a good business case for incremental electrification then ideally you would want to achieve each stage just before new trains are rolled out. So if it takes 5 years to plan and implement an electrification scheme then you want new trains just after. So for the first schemes...

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

I've noticed on Realtimetrains that the runs from Old Dalby to St Pancras and back are timed as for class 360 at 100mph under the wires. Presumably the full speed electric testing for double 810 units will be in the near future?

    NPR - Planned Electrification

Derby and Nottingham stations have already been redesigned with future proofing for Electrification. My understanding is that Sheffield station layout would need to be modernised?

    Restarting HS2a

If HS2a is built prior to NPR west then there is little additional passenger capacity created. Building Liverpool Warrington Manchester could create the necessary terminal capacity for the HS2 trains.

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

I am not sure whether to post this information in this thread - Mods please move if required. The East West Rail Company submitted a very detailed track access application to Network Rail on 15 December 2025...

Avanti to run 0700 Manchester to Euston as empty stock from December 2025 timetable change

By increasing the risk of performance worsening this will reduce the willingness of ORR to grant more open access on WCML (eg the proposed Rochdale service). An additional benefit for Avanti and HM Treasury?
