Talking to 2 ex BR drivers at Grosmont, they both queried the use of drain cocks, stating they were overused and would cause lubrication issues with the cylinders.

Regarding Cross Gates. I think both of the 2 scenarios mentioned above make sense. Trains from the east can turn back during the day and return to Neville Hill at close of service.
