Yes that is correct. The Mark 4 failed with a coach fault at short notice. As a result that was all TfW could do at such short notice. Ideally TfW would have a 5 car 197 spare at Crewe depot but that is not realistic.

I agree it is probably a unit on skates. Judging by its booked arrival time of 0442 in Guildford they probably can't get it Reading in one night without it interfering with morning start up. Expect another path on another night from Guildford to Reading. Alternatively they may road transport...

For as long as I've worked on the railways there has been occasional mix up with units. I don't think it is particularly more common with TfW. I also feel that doesn't matter how hard TfW try there will be the occasional error. It is quite rare. If you spot an error like this it can be helpful...
