    Jeremy Corbyn pledges rail renationalisation

I'm not sure someone who believes in the same rail structure as Mrs Thatcher is necessarily a "hard core ultra left winger". Not to mention that lots of the public, including very many Tory voting commuters don't like privatized rail. But agree that nationalization won't solve the big problems.

    HS2 in the press

Current Londoner here, similarly irritated by Gilligan's serial fraud. Not least his setting up David Kelly by revealing his name to MPs, not what a journalist should do with a source.

Turnaround time, not dwell time. Apol for confusion. And thanks for all the replies.

    HS2 in the press

Sterling work, thanks. One thing I don't really get- why are the dwell times for HS2 trains so much quicker than conventional intercity trains?

Overcrowding - could it be due to migration into this country?

They can say what they like about themselves. They're serial misleaders. See Jonathan Portes for details.

Jeremy Corbyn would consider women-only rail carriages

Well, compartment, carriage, would there be much difference legally?

    Network Rail Budget Cut

What difference does which department it is make? The key is meeting overall expenditure/deficit targets. You might as well blame it on Gove wasting a fortune at the DfE. --- old post above --- --- new post below --- Reduce the number of MPs and you basically make it impossible for the...

    DfT budget cut by £545m

Universal Credit is combining various benefits into a single payment. It's not really relevant to austerity or Haartz. Anyway, Haartz was done against a backdrop of a growing EU economy. Making changes like that are politically difficult to do at times like that, but economically much easier...

    DfT budget cut by £545m

Those £30bn of cuts won't happen, just as the 2010 plan was scrapped in 2012 last time.

    The Pain of London Overground

A longtime lurker writes: I'd be interested to hear what infrastructure improvements would be needed. One thing lurking has taught me is that there's usually a good reason why things are as they are. But crike, LO feels slow to me too.

The Economist : HS2 Railroad to nowhere

Government debt as percentage of GDP 2002: 30.9% 2008: 37.2% Clearly that isn't very good, but you can over do the "huge budget deficit" stuff and how much it limits the room for spending now. The government isn't sitting there now thinking it could have done all sorts of nice things if...
