    Travel Beyond Validity...

The majority of experienced travelers would fail to understand why any route further up a line should be legal or not depending on the originating station - hence why I felt this information was unimportant (yes, lesson learnt now). Had I purposely hidden this fact (and it would be pretty...

Some unexpected news... Unbeknownst to me, my father took it upon himself to write to the company and express his concerns. On the back of that I received a cheque this morning covering my penalty fare and the cost of my taxi. In the letter, they confirmed I had been issued a penalty fare...

I don't disagree. I jumped on the first train at Liverpool Street station to get home for my poorly son (as any normal person would). I then checked ahead of Chelmsford and took the fastest route shown. From Chelmsford the route in the screenshots is the one I followed. I agree with you...

Furlong, thank you for your help. Regarding the appeal, I attached the following: 1. Screenshot of the route on thetrainline.com 2. Screenshot of the route on National Rail 3. Screenshot of the route on Abellio's website 4. Copy of nursery letter (stating child had to be picked up as a...

Thanks najaB, sound advice. The 'Penalty' has just been paid.

Just a quick update. The appeal was rejected, letter attached. I would be interested in your thoughts. It doesn't seem right that anyone should be expected to pay a penalty fare for following the fastest route shown on the railway operator's own website.

    Thanks for that. :)

So the appeal is in - more hassle, cost etc but I want to see common sense applied to this situation (I know, I know). Thanks again guys, I'll keep you posted on what happens next.

Many thanks all. I genuinely appreciate all your comments. I'll attempt to appeal this and clarify the situation with the train company during the coming week.

You're right that the route is longer than a direct train. However given the absence of a stopping service when I was at the station, this route was the fastest at the time by 7 mins.

So have I fallen into a grey area of the operator's making then? There was little interest shown in my explanations. A second member of staff read the nursery messages from my phone and I mentioned the route being 7 mins shorter several times - I mentioned thetrainline.com once.

Thanks Neil, really appreciate the help at this ungodly hour. I'll do this on Monday. Off-topic, how are these collectors allowed to act? I felt sick to my stomach being escorted off the train but was then ignored when I politely stated my intended route and asked questions. I then asked...
