Handling steam loco pressure valve noise

There is no way of controlling that noise once the valve lifts. Only when the pressure drops below the Set Point will the valve close and the noise stop. The South African Class25 Condensers actually had a vent line that directed the Safety Valve emitted steam into the Condensing Line that lead...

Hot water delivered from tanker to loco tender at mainlineside.

It was for this very reason that the South African Class 25 Condensers had Turbo Pumps fitted. The water in the Condenser well was too hot for injectors but pumps just push it in whatever the temperature. Turbo exhaust steam simply vented back into Cylinder exhasut duct and it too was recycled...

AWC Derailment at Shap Summit 03/11/25

Did well to remain upright and on its wheels! Lucky or good design.

    Cylinder drain cocks (steam)

There are nearly always [or at least on BR Standards] Spring Loaded Relief valves at each end of cylinder as a final last-chance to prevent massive damage. Not sure what opening setting is but it will be close to max boiler pressure. But as stated it is a bit of over-caution, better to be on...

    Oct 10-12th, what’s on?

Slightly off topic but the Pickering 1940's Weekend event is on both days. It is being promoted as a 1940's event with a good bias of "Dont mention the War" about it. Organisers want [rigtly or wrongly] to de-milliterise the event so dont expect any throw back to previous "War" Weekends, it...

Railway 200: Greatest Gathering Derby tickets and exhibits

Excellent! I was there Saturday and came away totally exhausted, sure got my steps in that day! I must have accidently photo-bombed some 50 shots, for which I heartly appologised and tried not to get in anyones way and waited for that special shot to be taken before walking in front. Everyone...

Which Peak District railways to visit?

Midland Railway at Butterley is fine for a full day. Dont think you can do it in a few hours because you wont manage to see the best bits. Swanwick is only accessible via the train from Butterley so forget the car. Leave car at Butterley station and just go with the flow.

    Restoration of Signal Boxes

For starters, £25k is only the asking price, the final contract price could/should be somewhat less. Secondly, its still a case of Location, Location, Location !! What is there in the imeadiate vicinity? Third, what would you do with it ? Holiday let seems to be probably best option. Fourth...

Drax Output to be Reduced after 2027

May I draw your attension to the following; https://www.theguardian.com/business/2025/jan/08/two-power-station-owners-to-get-more-than-12m-for-three-hours-of-electricity Seems on 8 January 2025, 2 x CCGT power plants held the National Grid to ransom..... !! Basically no wind = no grid...

    Build a new Turbomotive!

Hideously expensive to say the least. There are a full batch of incomplete new-builds waiting for finance to get these anywhere near completion, so another huge money-pit loco design will only take funding away from the present new-builds. Just look at P2 to see what it costs for such schemes...

'Tangmere' failure on Cumbrian Mountain Express today - 21st September

In the first clip, the Deisel on the rear was pushing quite hard. Have to admit, it did not 'sound' quite right [although I am no steam fitter] so not qualified to make a definitive statement!

Could trains be fitted with an Anti-lock braking system?

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/incident-at-talerddig-wales-21-10-2024.275845/ If leaf mulch can be so lethal, one question that springs to my mind is are the 158's fitted with ABS? I assume not as I believe they are Disc brake only and once the wheel is...

What's the point of the Harrogate-London LNER service?

Its part of the Golden Triangle for the well heeled! Leeds - Harrogate - Wetherby, their need is well represented and as previously mentioned, takes some pressure off the Leeds - Doncaster route and onto the ECML. As Duffield says " Harrogate is very much a "destination" in the way York is and...
