Growing up along the midland mainline I also fondly remember the MML teal era and agree it was (for me) one of the best era’s on that route. Also anywhere around the north midlands circa 1995-2005 when class 37/56/60 were still common on freight workings.
To add to the point 4 answer above, you will also find OLE jobs with some of the bigger contracting firms, Balfour Beaty etc. Dependent on location TFL also employ power techs for their network.
I don’t really have a great knowledge of the role so hopefully someone else can help you with the details of that. However I did have an interest in the role some years ago, and from what I remember the interview was broadly similar to a signaller interview. “Give us an example of” type...
Not really sure how it ended up with those particular hours, most Scottish boxes I know of are rostered as 12-00. Actual hours vary hugely from box to box though.
