    So at this point its going to be impossible to prove that the exact train didn't have adequate markings so we are resigned to a settlement if possible. Is there any harm in writing a letter ourselves? rather than engaging a solicitor who will charge a small fortune. Thanks

    It doesn't actually state what in either of their letters. I think she got a small piece of paper which stated something on the lines of being in the wrong part of the carriage without valid ticket or travelling without valid ticket etc.
