Thanks for all the replies. Knowing that there aren't hard and fast rules for advance tickets is still very useful to know. I'm currently working my way through the linked thread - seems to be lots of good stuff there.

I'm trying to obtain a better understanding of how advance tickets work - sorry for all the questions! How are they allocated? Is there an allocation per station or does it depend on destination too? Or are they allocation per station group? Or do they cover all associated stations too...
