The problem is that at that time we are talking about is rush hour, and there was no doubt on behalf of the staff on the gates, he/she was adamant it wasn't valid and should be up to ticket office staff to double check, (unless an excess was requested straight away)

even so IF that were correct, would not be info that gateline would be privvy to, more ticket office based info, gateline instruction would be no entry to super off peak within London (vic, lbg, clj, ecr) unless journey origin / destination is outside NSE area...
Southern super off peak restictions cover entry into ECR barriers, journey seems to be wholly within the NSE so seems to me to be correct (apart from the guards advice later on)
Dartford station entrance has ticket office with 3 windows, (not fully staffed), a gateline which is usually (at peak times and daytime) operated by RPIs, unless the OP asked one of these people then the nearest customer service representative would have been on the platform of departure.
