Electrostar and Turbostar- Why so many differences?

I've always wondered if the early Electrostars shared anything in common with 'Universal Networker' (Class 471, 371, 381) proposed by Network SouthEast, as the jist of them are very similar? Well, with the exception that the proposed 471 on the Kent Coast services had compartments.

    The Forum Turns Twenty!

Happy birthday RailUK, I've been on the site since it's earlier days, joining way back in May 2009... I've learnt an awful lot on here about railways, compared to when I joined as a naive and annoying 14 year old... I'm now 30 years old! I've also made some lovely life long friends on RUK...

    Class 376 refurbishment 2025/2026

With the exception of the 375s, every operator of SouthEastern seems to have done the absolute bare minimum in looking after their suburban stock... The Class 465s have had a few things done with them over the years, but most have been minor alterations with PIS, seating moquette, or updating...

Do you prefer Avanti 390s or Avanti 221s?

Having experienced both (regularly travelling the entirety of the WCML from Euston to Glasgow) I prefer the Class 390s hands down. When I've had to use 221s between Crewe and Glasgow I felt slightly claustrophobic and didn't find the engines vibrating through the carriage to pleasing either...

Which train type will you miss the least when they are all withdrawn?

Very true. Every SouthEastern franchise since Connex seems to have neglected 465/466s to the point they are in a right state now. Given the right care and overhauls them along with their diesel sisters would be pretty decent units... They seem to just give them a tidy up on the outside and slap...

Which train type will you miss the least when they are all withdrawn?

Class 700s, 707, 717. Just horrid trains all round. Not only super uncomfortable with the notorious ironing board seats. The open corridors between carriages letting sound from the entire train through... Could be sent for scrap tomorrow and I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

    Oldest livery still in service?

Connex livery on the Class 376s could be a contender...

    Photography Request: Grove Park Station

Hi there, I don't know if this is in the right section of the forum to ask. (Please feel free to move if necessary moderators) One of my hobbies is looking into local history of my surrounding area. My local station is Grove Park, and I was wondering if there are any members of the forum that...

Trivia: Services that you find interesting for one reason or another

The Bromley North Branch when it runs directly to and from London Charing Cross during engineering work or new years eve. The last regular direct service ceased in 1990 I believe.

Which type of train still in service today will you miss most when they've all been withdrawn from use on the national network?

For me atleast, I certainly noticed the difference between VTs 1st Class and Standard seating. Even if the reclining seat only moved a few centimetres The overall 1st Class effect from the seating to the surroundings always made it worth it to me. I haven't experienced Avanti just yet, only...

Which type of train still in service today will you miss most when they've all been withdrawn from use on the national network?

Class 465s would be my obvious choice. My personal favourite units... One of the last BR designed units before privatisation too. Class 375s/Class 377s. I started off in my younger days hating them for replacing my beloved Slamdoors, but over the years they have grown on me quite a bit. I can...

    Best looking Rolling Stock Liveries?

Personal favourite liveries of mine: Network SouthEast. Just looked very smart and uniform on anything it touched. GNER. It just looked the business. It looked like a premium and classy brand through its livery alone. LoadHaul. I can't even articulate why I like it specifically, but it just...
