    Mobility Scooters on Northern Question

Here is a tweet from a few weeks ago about the mobility scooter testing on the Furness Line. Text below, original tweet includes photos of the test. The photos are of people on mobility scooters / powered wheelchairs entering / exiting the train on a ramp, and of two people (one on a scooter...

    Northern Class 331: Construction/Introduction Updates

The latest Network Rail Enhancements Delivery Plan on their website (December 2019) still includes "longer train standages on platform 6" as part of Phase 3 of the Leeds Station Capacity Enhancements, Entry Into Service date of Dec 21. The news articles in March 2019 reporting on the 2 year...

    Northern Class 331: Construction/Introduction Updates

So, to make sure I've read correctly, while what you're saying makes sense, this is your own conclusion - there has not been any official communication from Northern saying that 6-car operation has been binned? Which is where I think I'm getting confused with all this.

    Northern Class 331: Construction/Introduction Updates

I thought 6-car operation on Leeds North West was just waiting on the platform extensions at Leeds to allow 6 car formations to squeeze in amongst the other terminating services? Which Network Rail plans to complete in early 2021, around 2 years late. Is that no longer the case?

WMR Class 196 Build and Implementation

TBH, I'd rather have no armrests than having a fixed arm rest against the train wall - I always find those really uncomfortable.

    Caledonian Sleeper

Tube trains don't generally have to run around in Scottish weather conditions, which can be a main contributory factor towards turning structural metallic elements into something resembling Swiss cheese. See also water leaks from toilets / catering facilities, neither of which are prevalent on...

TPE Class 397 ('Nova 2') construction and updates

Do you seriously think the HVAC was purposefully designed to make everything too hot or too cold? Rather than there's something gone wrong with it that's resulted in this unfortunate mode of operation? HVAC systems generally aim to maintain the saloon within +/-X degrees of the "set"...

    Northern Class 331: Construction/Introduction Updates

I think 027 is currently at Edge Hill for commissioning. 014 has been in service since at least the last week of January when it was running around coupled to 017.

Question regarding Class 68 loco noise level

CAF didn't make the locomotives, so they wouldn't have been given noise limits for the locomotive. The spec requirement that'd be relevant to the coaches is a limit on power draw, and the people that wrote the spec may not have appreciated that they'd need to limit power below a certain amount...

Question regarding Class 68 loco noise level

It's likely the HVAC system draws more power than on older coaches. At 0500 in winter it'll be working reasonably hard to heat up all the coach interiors. I expect the kitchen / galley equipment will also draw more power than on older coaches, although less need for that in the depot.

Converting ELR & Mileage to OS or Lat/Long Co-Ordinates

Alliance Blackpool service to be run by Grand Central and start in 2021

I agree - it strikes me that someone calculated how far up the WCML they needed to go to make the numbers work, then picked a terminus station on a connecting branch line a short distance further on with enough spare capacity / suitable platforms to accomodate a long-ish layover. Bonus that...

Too much money on new trains, not enough on infrastructure?

I think there was a lot of work in CP5 and on-going into CP6 to replace or life-extend legacy signalling assets from the 70s that was becoming life expired. In some cases, it may have made sense to make improvements at the same time and future proof the equipment rather than just renew like for...

    Northern Class 195: Construction/Introduction Updates

Here's the post in the 331 thread, @86247 lists 2 x 3-car 195s awaiting delivery. I think you might be confusing the original entry into service date of Dec 2018 with the overall timescales to build, test and deliver 58 units. The Dec 18 date will have been set for when ARN had enough units...
