As I recall, in the '70s the three principal Manchester stations (and Stockport and Bolton) had fares to any station in Ireland (Republic & NI), via various sea routes, thanks to the large Irish community. For the main destinations they were available in the standard, domestic , horrid LMR...
Most of the Guide Bridge - Stalybridge shuttles are actually through services from Stockport apart from a few peak hour extras. Bradshaw is stuck in its pre-nationalisation layout - the June 1955 LM timetable (available for free on 'Timetable World' ) gives a better picture. BR - for once -...
In GC / LNER days it was just a shuttle between Guide Bridge and Stalybridge, also serving Ashton (Park Parade).
After the direct (ex LNW) 'Hooley Hill' line closed in 1950 BR routed Stockport - Stalybridge services this way, with most calling at Dukinfield C until it closed in 1959.
I travel regularly between Paddington and Exeter / Plymouth and I can't stand the bl**dy things! The seat issue is well known, but the ride quality on the lightweight bogies is absolutely appalling. Admittedly the track quality on the Berks & Hants is not the best, but the IETs are far worse...
That'll be Liverpool Central. Through carriages St. Pancras to Liverpool didn't resume post WW2 - and by '30s the LMs had already reduced it to one pair only.
Yes, Goodrington would be a good start, being relatively easy to achieve and with, as you say, a large ready made car-park.
As for Churston it is a pity it couldn't continue to Brixham - it is as after all the terminus of the main bus flow through the Bay rather than Kingswear. The course of...
There were some with large train sheds in the European style - Philadelphia Broad Street (closed 1952), Philadelphia Reading Terminal (closed 1984, but still extant as a market ) St. Louis Union (closed 1978 but remains as shopping / entertainment complex - trains use a nearby 'Amshack').
Ah, the 'deeply inefficent BR' as Major said - at least BR always got you home.
Only a year to go to nationalisation (or earlier if there are any more disasters) - what is intriguing is how XC will fit into GBR. Presumably it will be divvied up amongst the 'regions', including the Control...
Heathfield is on the 'wrong' road (A38) and too far from Torbay for a P & R IMO. Bovey Tracey isn't very big and the road to Newton Abbot from Drumbridges (the A38 junction) is being substantially improved as we speak.
A more worthwhile project would be to extend the Riviera Line services to...
Prior to the '59/'60 rebuild, trains for Liverpool via Lymm and Ditton Junction also left from the 'South Junction' (as they were referred to) platforms. Provision was made for them at the rebuilt Oxford Road, only for the service to be withdrawn a couple of years later.
An office in Fennel St. would have been part of the Corn Exchange complex - bit of a stretch to call that 'Cheetham'. Having said that, the Hunts Bank offices were being run down at this time pending the move to Rail House, Piccadilly so perhaps it was a temporary arrangement.
I'm wanting the flexibility that the pre-1986 layout offered, where a train could arrive at, or depart from, either platform - not too fussed how this is achieved! There is a rising gradient from the level crossing, however - no idea if an additional crossover is permissible.
