230001 in Polmadie Depot for COP26

It is a photo shoot with Network Rail - that was the point of running it to Inverkeithing as well as to demonstrate the range. Managed to get to Inverkeithing last night (about 50 miles) with between 1/3 and 1/2 battery life left.

Class 230 units training/introduction on the Borderlands line: updates

As ever there is an element of truth in all this that is extrapolated to assumptions that are not quiet accurate!! "Thermal Event" as a descripion stems from the automotive industry where the diesel engines come from. The thermal event on 230008 did manifest itself as a DPF overheating that...

Creation of class 230 DEMUs from ex-LU D78s by Vivarail

Under its own power - suspect the loco hauled bit was NRs way of setting timings of 60mph max.

No big deal apparently. Described as configuration changes on the engine software. Apparently it did one round trip and then recessed into the sidings at Honeybourne for some checks. After that it ran to Evesham and back and Engineers were happy they had what they needed from today. Runs for...

Creation of class 230 DEMUs from ex-LU D78s by Vivarail

Thank you - I will forget everything I have learnt about travel patterns and growth gleaned in a 25 year career of involvement in growing railway patronage! Not sure which TOC's cost breakdown you are referring to but I would have said 1/3 would be more realistic - however that is not...

Creation of class 230 DEMUs from ex-LU D78s by Vivarail

I can't say that I am massively familiar with the line and the possible traveling requirements, but it is well known that an hourly service is not sufficient to make people break habits and change mode. It is highly likely that a twice hourly service would become more attractive for many more...

Creation of class 230 DEMUs from ex-LU D78s by Vivarail

It was stated earlier in the thread that moves were booked for it for training Wednesday - Saturday, but the contract that was expected to be signed was delayed at the last by DfT.

Apparently it has a couple of minor issues but nothing that stops it being used. However the contract for LM to use it has not been signed and authorised by DfT yet.

Probably not - that is why I referred to testing or modelling. For Vivarail I guess it was to try and prove to the doubters that they had taken it seriously and done something about it!

If you understood what they were trying to demonstrate you might not be quite so sarcastic with your comments! There is a BS EN (A British Standard based on a Euro Norm) called up by the TSI for Rolling Stock that defines the requirements for rail vehicle structures - part of that standard is to...

Passengers complaining about no seats available on busiest trains

Diesel hauled services where you need 5 or more coaches all day long. At this point a loco hauled solution is cheaper to operate provided that it operates in push pull mode and provided that the locomotive does not cause train length restrictions that cannot be solved another way. Whilst you...
