Saddest Sights on the Railways (Trivia)

For me, it’s has to be demolition & dismantling of railway infrastructure. The absolute haste in removing any indication that there ever was a railway, back in the 60s & 70s is heartbreaking. It almost comes across as rather spiteful. An example would be the Southport to Preston railway, closed...

Trivia: Stations which have gone downhill and got worse in recent years.

Manchester Victoria anyone? Part buried under the AO Arena & the other given over mostly to trams & covered with a dirty plastic roof. Thoroughly depressing place & the usual friendly Northern staff doing nothing to help brighten it up….

Trivia: Stations which look similar to each other or remind you of each other.

Glasgow Queen Street & Liverpool Central (ex CLC)

    Bleakest UK Station (Trivia)

I nominate the closed stations of Royton Junction, Park (both Gtr Mcr), Loch Skerrow on the old Port Road & Blaenrhondda.

Bleakest end of line station in National Rail UK in current use (Trivia)

I’m throwing in Barry Island. I wouldn’t like to find myself alone there on a cold winters evening. The station frontage is nice enough, but with only 1 platform now accessible, the whole station looks dreadful & in its death throes. The area outside the station doesn’t look too inviting either!

What are the widest and narrowest station platforms?

I think the LOR trains originally terminated at what would have been a platform opposite what is now platform 2 (for Southport) until it was destroyed by fire. It then terminated from P2 until closure of the LOR.

What are the widest and narrowest station platforms?

Would Chinley’s only remaining island be in with a shout for a very wide platform?

Trivia: What are the quirkiest railway stations in Britain?

Not sure if anyone’s mentioned Scarborough. Apparently it has the longest platform bench in the world @ 456 feet.

    Trivia: Bleakest Terminal Stations

My noms Liverpool Central Low Level. Just awful. Blackpool South. A true fall from grace. Barton upon Humber. Who goes there exactly?

Trivia: What are the quirkiest railway stations in Britain?

I’ll nominate Grindleford on the Hope Valley Line. The old waiting room at the top of ramp down to the Manchester platform, is a cafe. It sells half pints & pints of tea & coffee! Not to mention the biggest chip ‘cob’ I have ever seen in my entire life!! Great after a nice long walk in the...

Trivia: Downsized stations that are shells of their former selves?

Liverpool Central lost 6 mainline platforms, down to just the 2 remaining low level (pre Wirral Railway now Northern Line). Plus new ‘77 deep level platform (Wirral Line) So a net reduction of 5. Southport originally a 13 platform station (London Street excursion platform incl.) Now down to just 6.
