Worst Ferry Crossing you’ve been on?

Another vote for Newcastle-Bergen. It was a summer sailing in June 1990 but we hit a storm late in the evening after departure. The following morning the captain announced that it was the worst summer storm he'd encountered on that route. The return sailing a couple of weeks later was like a...

TRIVIA : Most Unusual names for bus/coach operators (current/historical)

Similarly the Guernsey Railway Company ran its last train before WW2 but carried on running buses until the early '80s I believe.

Do TfL-contracted services feature the operator's name anywhere?

The DLR had a modest of amount of Serco branding on some signage back when they ran it, but the last time I travelled on it is well over a decade ago so I don't know if that practice carried over to Keolis when they took over.

Where in Europe is rail travel a nightmare?

Iceland has aspirations to build a high-speed rail link from Reykjavik to Keflavik airport, but the ground-breaking date keeps getting pushed back. It was to start construction in 2022 at the end of 2019 but who knows when now.

Train announcements with a sense of humour

Back in the 2000s there was a conductor on what’s now Southeastern who would announce Sittingbourne as “Sittingbourne International. Change here for international services to the Isle of Sheppey.” These days I commute (when there’s no coronavirus) on the Metro-North Railroad Hudson line into...

Does Delay Repay still count if I gave up and caught the bus?

I would have thought that the cost to SWR of reviewing and rejecting the claim, even if OP doesn't appeal the rejection, probably exceeds the value of the repayment claimed. Surely the TOCs ought to have a de minimus related to the average cost of reviewing a claim, below which they will...

County name and abbreviation discussion (e.g. Hampshire -> Hants)

So do I, although I don't have much cause to write to the UK these days. I always use the pre-1965 borders of course.

County name and abbreviation discussion (e.g. Hampshire -> Hants)

I didn't write that copy, although I did mark it up into HTML back in c.1997. I'm fairly sure I wrote the first paragraph on that page though. Amazing it's still there 20+ years later! I think the traditional county abbreviations were much better known when it was normal practice to include...

    Barriers not accepting Oyster

Well, I've not lived in the UK for nearly eight years now, and I assumed the discs on the moulding where I guess a reader could go were readers. There was at least one other passenger as confused as I was.

    Barriers not accepting Oyster

Well the gate at T5 correctly charged me £10.10 on touch out so it’s all good.

    Barriers not accepting Oyster

Yes it was. I also tried the barriers at 2-3. Actually thinking about it, I think where I was trying to “touch in” on the barriers was actually a blank with no actual card reader.

    Barriers not accepting Oyster

Isn’t my journey the max possible fare for the line anyway?

    Barriers not accepting Oyster

So, I’m sat on the 10.41 TfL Rail at Paddington where the barriers were all open but more problematically weren’t accepting touch-in from Oyster card (they all read “tickets only” and did not respond to a card touch). I asked a TfL Rail staff member who wasn’t able to help. I guess when I get...

    Brexit Eurostar

I wouldn't call the Finland-Russia trains "token". There's four daytime Allegro trains a day in both directions between Helsinki and St Petersburg and a daily sleeper in both directions between Helsinki and Moscow. Given the size of the potential market, that seems about right to me...

    Non-UK resident - penalty fares?

My brother has been stopped for speeding in the UK on several occasions, and on producing his California driver's license, has been let off with a warning, one of which started "You do know there's not much we can do about you, don't you sir?"
