My mistake, I think I misinterpreted what I was told previously.
Thinking about it, first class in 2 coaches would be ridiculous... I'm not sure what I was thinking!
In terms of the /4s, I believe the original plan was to have the leading and trailing coaches (with the comfier seating) dedicated entirely to first class, with the two middle coaches (with the ironing board seating) remaining as standard. Of course, it was soon realised that capacity wouldn't...
A couple of months ago, 377101 failed near Pevensey and was rescued by a 387. A photo of this is shown on the link below:

I've only seen it done a few times - during one of the Eastbourne Airshows (2018 I think), the Brighton-Ore-Brighton services were formed of either a 377/1 or /4 and a 377/6 for 9 car diagrams.
Back in July, 377101 failed near Pevensey and was rescued by a 387 - another fairly rare sight...
A bizarre combination of units seen at Hampden Park 2 years ago.
A 377/6, 377/3 (342 to make it even more unique!) and 377/2. Everything about this formation was rare for the coastway!
Hmm, I might be wrong on this, but I was under the impression that 171s used door deselect instead of SDO. Door deselect requires the Guard to release the doors.
However, this may have changed so you could very well be right.
AFAIK the Guard opens the doors at all stations with short platforms. At Three Oaks and Doleham, he/she will release the doors from the panel in the front coach.
For this one: 171 (Marshlink) - Driver Open - Guard Close (But am wondering if it is now Guard Open - Guard Close since the four coach sets were introduced on this line? Could anyone confirm?)
At stations on this route that can accommodate 4 car 171s (e.g. Hampden Park), the Driver will open...
