Use of GTL fuel in railway locomotives?

Maybe calling it a local issue is a bit unfair. In London as a whole rail is responsible for 8% of all NOx emissions. This is the same as all TFL buses and four times that of taxis. Much publicity and legislation is being directed at these two latter polluters, little or nothing is being...

Use of GTL fuel in railway locomotives?

If you want to know why I am interested in any possibility of lowering the pollution levels at Marylebone Station, by reducing idling and replacing the use of diesel, read this from a resident. For those of you who say that she shouldn't have chosen to live there in the first place, remember the...

Use of GTL fuel in railway locomotives?

I am expecting that, when the current Chiltern franchise comes up for renewal, the updated conditions will include the requirement to switch diesel to new, much less polluting fuels, such as GTL, and battery power where practical. I am actually hoping that this Chiltern would make this move...

Use of GTL fuel in railway locomotives?

1: Is the prime mover able to burn said fuel. 2: How much would any conversion cost. 3: If conversion and use is not manufacturer approved, what happens with warranty claims. 4: Will there be an increase in maintenance. 5: What would be the potential for failures. 6: Increase in...

Use of GTL fuel in railway locomotives?

Looking to the future I was hoping that this fuel might replace diesel in locos and DMUs (you know my interest in Marylebone Station). I believe it is already in use abroad and there are no conversion costs as it is a straight substitution.

Use of GTL fuel in railway locomotives?

You were all very helpful in the past. Could you help with this question, please? Is there any prospect of diesel trains being transferred to run on GTL fuel? I believe that there is no conversion cost.

Question regarding turning Class 68 engines off

Apologies. I never acknowledged your very informative response. I can't find the you tube video to which you refer. Do you have a link, please?

Question regarding turning Class 68 engines off

But Chiltern do run non-loco services to Birmingham I think. I think they are 168s. Are these not DMUs? Could not they be coupled together?

Now I follow. Thanks, both of you.

Question regarding turning Class 68 engines off

What's that all about? I see it every day. Coupling and uncoupling DMUs at Marylebone is an everyday thing. Just didn't know how it all worked. Now I do. Have I missed your joke or something?

Question regarding turning Class 68 engines off

And, presumably, if you couple two sets of three together you will have a car with a driving cab in the middle, too.

Question regarding turning Class 68 engines off

Sorry. Letters crossed. I understand now except to ask, does each set have to have a driving cab at each end, or can it arrive at Marylebone with one at the front only, and another one get coupled to the other end for departure? And, to bring us back to residents issues (and sorry if this...

Question regarding turning Class 68 engines off

Would each car have an engine and a driving cab, even if it was the middle one of a set of three? I presume not every car can be driven seperately, or can it? How are they configured? Sorry if these seem basic questions.

Question regarding turning Class 68 engines off

Can you help me please? Can't get my head round this. Re DMUs. Is every carriage within a set a DMU or are there seperate carriages as well? eg does a four carriage 168 Clubman set comprise 2 DMUs and 2 carriages? And is that a set configaration or can it be altered to a 3 carriage set? On...
