    Just to let you guys know. He wrote to them and has been offered the option of an £80 fine which he will reluctantly take as opposed to going down the court route.

    Thanks for the info so far. Yes it was Northern Rail - I'll try and find out more or get him to come and post. Why would anyone say 'my brother' if it wasn't the case - this forum is anonymous.

    Yes turns out it was an unfortunate mistake. He bought his ticket not realising his rail card was 2 days out of date. They asked him for his details in a friendly way and upgraded his ticket and he thought nothing more of it. There was no confrontation or hint that any action would be taken. Now...
