The work at Wigan NW on the platforms is platforms 1, 2 & 3 is platform refurbishment - new surfacing, copers, drainage etc (similar to that being undertaken at Warrington BQ). The other platforms will also be done but 1, 2 & 3 can be "got at" under cover of the blockade works...
Speaking as a victim of National Express's Bus Operation in the West Midlands - interesting to see they are held in such high regard for their rail franchise.

Glossop is one of the nicest stations; the Friends of Glossop station have opened up the waiting rooms for the first time in decades, complete with pictures of the station & trains over the years. Plus it has an ornamental lion on the roof!
Wigan NW will have new platform surfaces / copers - work is to start late October 2011. Will be similar to the work currently taking place at Warrington Bank Quay.
There were problems with a roof panel on a Class 325, which caused the OLE to trip, the panel had to be removed prior to moving the train - hence the delays to trains on the Up. Down trains generally delayed due to Scottish train crews delayed on southbound services
