No, it’s purely down to unit availability if it’s an all day diagram. It’s a huge amount of effort to substitute the unit for the whole diagram if only one or two trips are uncovered due to lack of traction knowledge as several depots have now lost their 455 knowledge.
To be fair, being stuck at somewhere like Micheldever, Shawford or Beaulieu Road, your chances are significantly better on the train. Friends and relatives or taxis are unlikely to be able to make it to these remote places.
To bring this back on subject, I can see why the railway is so risk...

I’m sorry but that’s utter nonsense. Three trains got stranded as they couldn’t draw power from the 3rd rail. None were anywhere near stations and road access was impossible. Traincrew and passengers were stranded overnight with at least one unit losing hotel power as well. It certainly was not...
I believe Honiton to Exmouth is TCB throughout as there is intermediate block signals, and if there is a token less block, it’s very reliable as I’ve never heard of it failing.
Last time I looked they required 120 from 127 although two of those diagrams are ghosts, 1 diagram for graffiti and the other is 450104 which is long term out of service.
There’s obviously a reason those that allocate the stock overnight are choosing that particular diagrams but without having the details it’s impossible to know whether it’s operational convenience (laziness) or whether there’s a more limiting factor like crew traction knowledge etc
As was pointed out in the 701 thread, blockades such as those mentioned above don’t actually release staff. A driver and guards diagram would probably be something like 4 hours on the St Ives / Looe branch with an Exeter and back on the start / end. The Exeter is still running so half the work...
