Its likely the departing train left from platform 4, at Newport this is a self-dispatch platform, there are no platform staff present to hold or dispatch services.
There is a possibility the if the barrier staff were present on that occasion they may have requested the train manager to wait for...
During STJ's heyday there where 3 bay roads in place.
However only one, the aforementioned bay at the east end of the island platform was for passenger use, essentially the Wye Valley service.
The other bay roads were at both ends of [and behind] what was platform 1, the recently reopened...
I have been informed by staff at my local Arriva run station that ATW drivers are threatening to strike over key dates during the forthcoming rugby world cup.
I stress this is a rumour, however my source is convinced there is truth to this as a pay deal they thought had been done and dusted...
Debri on the line, damaged the fuel tank of a Barry/Newport service - a 153 I believe - which ended up blocking platform 2.
Platforms 3 & 4 were unavailable all day due to engineering work therefore both up and down services had to use platform 1.
Some services from Cardiff had to be reversed...
