Mobile phones and safety on the railway and other transport

Years ago I remember walking along the pavement alongside my best friend. We ended up bouncing off each other. I realised it was because we were both aiming for the same zombie coming towards us. I do try not to take avoiding action as I am interested in seeing how close they get - usually...

Bluebell Railway NSE Diesel Gala 4-6 September 2026

I wonder which came first ?. Bluebell Railway fixing the date OR Network rail planning the engineering work.

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

Reminds me of Woolworths towards the end. More likely an indication of slow decline of the chain rather than an individual store closure. I really notice the out of date signs in the Croydon WH Smith / TG Jones. Principally the closure of the 1st floor and all the signs still enticing people up...

    Back in the day...

D1200 Falcon was one that got away for me. I would love to have heard it and compared it to the Westerns. (reason - same pair of engines - 2 x Maybach MD655 iirc)

GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

There will be people reporting what they saw based on what a system said was on a particular train. So need to discount that. There will be people who took a photograph and know the date, time and location. That is extremely valuable. Also people who noted numbers and times of what they saw...

Mobile phones and safety on the railway and other transport

Some good examples of how social media is taking us over. Never mind - perhaps AI can do the important things for us !.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

I don't recall 701028 being there before and often that road or others in the shed is empty during the day.

When walking along track, why shouldn't you step on sleepers?

Yes I think sleeper to sleeper is too short a step for my long legs but skipping two sleepers is too far. The cess makes more sense as does not interfere with ones walking rhythm except if there are too many obstructions there.

When walking along track, why shouldn't you step on sleepers?

I would say that concentrating on stepping from one sleeper to the next has two risks. First you are probably taking unnaturally large or small steps and some how this feels like it relies more on a good grip. Second, while concentrating on looking down at where you are putting your foot leads...

    Progress with 345 071 - 345 080

I was only suggesting delivery to Crewe rather than Old Oak Common depot because Crewe is so close to Derby where the unit was delivered from. But, as yourself and others have said, too much to do first and specifically at Wembley (it seems, rather then its home depot aiui ?) before any test...

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

True. I suppose it could be part of handling the risk of someone leaving their car on the charging bay long after its full. As an aside I have started wondering EV owners/drivers that are disabled fare. The reason is I notice disabled parking bays are near the store entrance (quite rightly)...

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

I agree. It is another income stream for the freeholders who are no doubt under pressure not to put up the lease charges on the actual store on the same plot. On the subject of not being able to notice signs - I am anally good at that BUT two near misses :- The Morrisons near me is 2 hours...

    Back in the day...

Yes. I remember the 87s were brand new when I started spotting that year - 1974. I would hope for an 87 at New Street where the displaced 50s were just starting to replace the wonderful Westerns sadly.

    Progress with 345 071 - 345 080

But does the testing need to start at Wembley or is Crewe just as good ?. It depends how much testing/other-work was done after delivery and before the runs on the WCML I assume not much as iirc the unit was running on the WCML the day after delivery.

Mobile phones and safety on the railway and other transport

Some of the pedestrians I see wandering across the road look like they just do not care. It is as though they think it is not up to them to be careful despite the fact it is them who will get hurt. Mind you my mother had someone she hit as she reversed out of a space - turned out the man had...
