    Not all parts of the system are as bad as this Ascot example. At my local station of Lewes, the Brighton-Seaford service is often held for a late running London-Eastbourne service so that the connection is protected.

    Comedic announcements

    Many years ago there was a well known guard on the Manchester-Euston run. He used to play a harmonica over the PA. One of his announcements also ended “...and we will be travelling at a height of 6ft above the track”. Greatly missed!

    Trivia: Place names that you're not sure how to pronounce

    In East Sussex... Lewes pronounced Lew-is rather than Loos And you can always tell a 'local' announcer when they say Sea-ford rather than the usual Seafud. PS. These days Salford is in Greater Manchester, not Lancashire.
