Well, my friend is going to decide what to do soon. My gut feeling is that they may write into the train company. Had I know at the time that they were providing false details I'd have stopped them, as I'd spent a good 15 minutes trying to get details about how to contest.
Either way, I'll...
It's a shame the first advise we got was from this forum after everything happened. I know I personally, and my my friend says that they too have never heard of this requirement ever. Like I say, we've always purchase on train for years.

Just an...
The name was completely false. Do you believe that they'll send a letter to the old address with the fake name on? If so, would we be able to contact the current occupants, and when the letter comes, if it's a fine, still pay it?
They were asked if they had intended to buy a ticket, to which they answered yes, but I don't think it's the same thing. Annoyingly, he had a ticket machine but was reluctant to use it. My friends first words to the man were 'can I buy a ticket'.

Well, like I said earlier, we actually have no idea what is going to happen. He asked if my friend had means to pay for the ticket, which they said they did, and we explained how they withdrew money just before getting on the train in order to pay. And Sheffield was the first station for the...
Sheffield Station, to Meadowhall station, which is just a one stop gap.
My friend just asked if anyone know who to ring, or what number, or what department to ask for etc.
Thanks again everyone by the way.

That actually surprises me, as...
I don't want to sound rude, but could I just quickly ask what for. I know you're trying to help me, I'm just paranoid at the moment
I'd be happy to tell you however.
My apologies about the mix-up, there was a break down in communication between me and my friend. My friend says that they cannot be 100% sure that nothing about a fine was said, but we took nothing away with us.
However, as I spoke to the officer colleague, I was asking questions like, 'what...
This is where I'm confused though. My friend actually hasn't received a penalty fare or anything, we just presume that this is what it is. The officer only took details and said that the company would be in touch. We've never actually been told what they were took for.
What do you think they...
I can assure you that my 'friend' is indeed a friend, and not myself as you are implying.
Anyway, what is the next procedure that the rail company will take. Will they check that the person lives at the address, or will they send the fine to that house, just addressed to the name given? If...
No, it happened today, and they said they'd contact them. Quite a few people on our train were in the same situation.
