The London to Bourne End leg is not subject to off peak restrictions as it is leaving London and it will be well after 10:00 by the time I leave London anyway. Hence the reason I was only asking about the Stansted to London leg. That is the only part potentially subject to off peak restrictions...

Agreed. I saw no one exiting the station do this and there was a crowd of passengers going down the stairs in front of me.

Thanks for the info. I'll have a look round next time I travel late but at 1 am you usually just follow the crowds down the steps :) Either they are all on paper tickets, they are all claiming refunds or they just don't know/care about the extra charge.
