Class 365 PBC Unit and PIS system

Correct. And the system found on ADtranz/Bombardier 'Star' trains is a further development of this Whiteley system. At some point they switched from EPROM to PCMCIA cards, which is where the 73TS PCC file comes from. It is also evident from the 378 Overground announcements, that those trains...

Class 365 PBC Unit and PIS system

Thanks a lot for all of this. However the format is still incorrect - if it was really VOX ADPCM, the audio would be completely clear. My guess is that it could be either MS ADPCM or IMA ADPCM, with the same 16kHz sample rate and 4-bit encoding. I suspect the Piccadilly Line announcements that...

    Tube train automated announcements 2005

It is not Janet Mayo - all the original voice samples stored on EPROM chips were replaced in 2003, and TfL are not believed to hold a copy of those recordings. For many years there was an old computer in Ruislip depot which was said to hold a backup of them, but at some point in the early to mid...

    Tube train automated announcements 2005

The 2021 Northern Line announcement updates (Northern Line extension and Elizabeth Line related messages) believed until now to be a processed version of Elinor Hamilton's voice, are in fact the voice of Louisa Gummer. And she openly describes herself as 'the newest voice of the Northern Line'...

    Tube train automated announcements 2005

My hunch is that the Mk2 version came about in 2003 when the newly TfL-controlled London Underground embarked on an effort to update and standardise all recorded announcements - this is when the phrase 'National Rail services' came into use. Of course, Emma Clarke never made it to the JNP...

Class 365 PBC Unit and PIS system

Assuming there is not any sort of further encryption, the audio samples ideally need to be extracted using a suitable EPROM reader and converted into WAV format if it is to be preserved for the future.

It would be really something if someone manages to extract the audio from these EPROMs - I can see the 'GT North' (Great Northern) ones are labelled June '99, although it does appear the 'South East' ones are older. It will most likely be in a raw ADPCM format though.

The replacement 365 recordings are the exact same files as used on the 700/707/717 trains. As far as Connex goes, if you check the 'Master List' folder of 465 audio that Southeastern released, it does still contain the 'Thank you for travelling with Connex' message - from memory it is file...

    Tube train automated announcements 2005

Thanks, I was genuinely unaware that one still remained! As heard in the second half of this video, just the one 'Vera' lift with 'stand clear of the doors please' and the obstruct message mentioned earlier - none of the extra stuff found in the old Bakerloo lifts. I did try to ask TfL many...

    Tube train automated announcements 2005

There are no lifts with the 'Vera' voice left on the system. The last ones were Lambeth North and Elephant & Castle (Bakerloo line), and were replaced in late 2014. These were station specific messages announcing landmarks and bus connections available on the way up, and directions to the...

    Tube train automated announcements 2005

Various field recordings do exist out there with some people, but whether they choose to share them publicly is up to them. However the original master files are thought to be lost. An extensive search was made for them a decade ago and LUL/TfL were not able to find anything. Unless of course...

(Trivia) Scheduled passenger services that terminate after 2am in the morning

To add to this, on weeknights, there is also a 23:35 St Pancras to Nottingham, running via the Manton route, reversing at Leicester, and usually arriving in Nottingham at 02:19, although like the above service, the arrival time is often changed to be anytime between then and 03:00. During...
