You might like to watch this video, it's a bit dated as it talks about the building of the Shanghai Maglev. Worth a watch, in my opinion.

I agree tunnelling would be expensive. Given the ability to handle gradients of up to 10% without loss of speed, they could be much shorter, I guess. Where there is space in a station for an elevated platform, possibly a guideway running above the current rail track might be acceptable?

Thanks for the balancing report. Things have moved on since then in the development of Maglev which is why I think there should be more investigation into the sytem.
