Unless the capacity is required the staff will keep people in solo berths. So, travelling at the start/end of the week you're more likely to be sharing - how likely I don't know. Midweek I'd be surprised if you share.

My guess for the FTW job is they'll transfer a GLQ driver. Think FTW only have about 5 drivers so they're essentially 20% down on their workforce at the moment. I can't imagine them taking the time to put a newbie through training when they're 20% understaffed when they could just transfer...

Mallaig to Inverness would be via Glasgow Queen Street - quite a detour, but I know you asked for a rail journey. I'd recommend a Citylink coach from Mallaig (or Fort William, if you return there by train) to Kyle. The Kyle-Inverness line I imagine would be beautiful, as JJ comments, and...
