    Scotland intermodal freight

Intermodal trains don't tend to run unless they are fully laden, or almost full. It just doesn't make economic sense otherwise. So, for a train running (rather than just scheduled) it's a reasonable assumption that it's carrying somewhere in the region of 60-70 TEU; empty boxes need...

    Scotland intermodal freight

Are there any resources that track intermodal freight to/from Scotland, i.e. number of weekly trains, number of containers carried etc.? Container volumes through seaports have been on the decline since 2022, and I'm trying to get a handle on how much of this is a result of modal shift to rail...

    scrap trains for export

Yes, estimating at least 3 million tonnes will be going to Port Talbot by 2028 or so, then up to 5 eventually. The stuff going by rail to a port is the obvious diversion to the EAFs, which is why I'm trying to size that, to get an idea of the effect on bulk exports of scrap. Scunthorpe is still...

    scrap trains for export

I'm trying to get a hold on how much scrap moves by rail to ports for export. Seeing current regular paths to Liverpool (4-5 per week from Attercliffe, Kingsbury and Swindon), and Cardiff (~2 per week from Burton). I understand the Immingham train stopped a while ago. Anyone know of others? I...

Is green electricity subsidising rail freight?

Aside from rail freight/mode shift grants etc., the fact that traction electricity is all from green sources (EDF nuclear currently), is this seen as an extra subsidy for rail freight, vs. e.g. shipping which can't use electricity, or road, which also primarily still uses diesel? Much of this...

Restrictions on Manchester Piccadilly tracks 13 and 14 for freight? Any potential solutions?

Nothing more than "someone said that someone else said it" to alleviate passenger capacity concerns (assuming 15/16 doesn't happen), so I'm wondering if it's actually something that's being discussed, or an innocent repeat of something that was meant to be ridiculous.

Restrictions on Manchester Piccadilly tracks 13 and 14 for freight? Any potential solutions?

Has anyone heard anything about possibly only allowing freight trains to/from Trafford Park to pass through Piccadilly at night?
