Thankfully we came across (what I assume would normally be) the staff canteen which was next to the Inspiration set. Got a cold drink, chips, and a cheese and onion pastry slice for a very reasonable £6.50!
This reply is seemingly too late, but having used several other P&Rs on the network, I assume Radcliffe is the same as these. So park your car, walk to the platform, tap in/buy ticket, and board! There's no ANPR or machines etc.
The direct BPN-MAC service only runs sporadically, the normal last Macc service is the 23:16 off Picc. It's interesting when it runs though, as it's one of the few 6 car services to serve the Stoke line (excluding Christmas Saturdays!).
At my TOC, TrainFX sounds an automatic 3-3 when either cab to cab is used, or if a call for aid is activated. It's important to look at the display to check which it is!
Also at Piccadilly are the xx:03 Northern Hadfield and xx:03 CrossCountry Bristol TM departures. Usually on the adjacent platforms 2 and 3 too, when the roof work isn't going on!
New Mills Central box is definitely still in use, it's just south of the platforms. It fringes with Manchester East SCC to the north, and New Mills South Junction SB which is, unsurprisingly, to the south :D
As you say, at my TOC we're instructed that a junction indicator must display at least three lights (referred to as Lunar Lights) for the route to be accepted. But it should be reported regardless of how many bulbs have failed. I do wonder how this works with the new VMS-type bar junction...
It's not necessarily the case that crew can't politely challenge control, it's perfectly reasonable to make suggestions if we think the decision is not ideal. Control have the overall insight of what is happening on the network, but it's crew that can see directly what is happening on the...
I was told it's closed for a refit, it was giving out free food on the last day before it closed apparently. I know a fair few of the station staff would be devastated if it were permanent :lol:
