Sorry to butt in late to this conversation, but the difference between 143 and 144 when they were first introduced (and the reason for the separate class numbers) was the gearbox configuration. 143s had an SCG mechanical gearbox like the 142s, and 144s were equipped with Voith hydraulic...- lacorbiere
