Are drivers trained on what to expect to feel from a derailment?

No. We're taught what to do if there is one but not really what it would feel like. In the case of the Lewes derailment, the coaches came apart so that would have dumped the air pressure and applied the brakes. The driver would have known something major had happened but wouldn't have...

Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

The ladder is there to be used for whatever it's possible to use it for. One of the pictures from the scene showed it being used to successfully evacuate people from a sideways train carriage.

Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

Nope, no speed restrictions there today. The mainline had a blanket speed restriction of 70mph between Quarry Tunnel and Balcombe Tunnel so that'll be where those slight delays were coming from.

Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

I sign this route. The train called at Cooksbridge so I'd say with some confidence that it would have been doing around 40mph where it derailed.

Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

Southern driver here. I sign all routes through Lewes. I definitely handle the entire dispatch procedure at all platforms at Lewes.

    Southern and GTF.

One of the units they were going to use for Reading to Gatwick today broke down and they couldn't put another unit out there. Quite simple.

Report of collision Bedford (Elstow) - 19/06/26

Sorry if it's been mentioned already but 9 seconds of braking and the speed only dropped by 27mph? I don't know the 360s but does that suggest he didn't have it in emergency? The trains I drive would drop more than that in brake step 2 ..

Do Different Driving Styles Affect Punctuality?

If there's 3 miles from station A to station B and the line speed is 70mph and the driver takes it right up to that - taking into account a very rough assumption on acceleration and braking then it'll do that journey in around five minutes. Now, assume the same hypothetical train with same...

Do you actually remember all of the rulebook?

Once you've been out driving for long enough, you just know how things are supposed to be. So for example, sat here right now I couldn't quote word for word what the rulebook says about rescuing another train but I've done it a few times so I know exactly what to do. Same with single line working.

Removing trains from departure boards early…

The device you used to post this can also be used to check platforms for services.

    RAIB Inspector Role

Reckon a train driver could apply for this?
